Can you identify this mysteriuos turbo housing??
 

I bought my evo used and when i pulled out my stock turbo, there was a surprise. The compressor housing does not appear to be stock. It is identical to the real stocker thru the outside but thru the inside its bigger. There are no part numbers on it either. On these pics you can see the difference. The real stocker is on the left.

Is it ported?

I think it could have possibly been ported. If it is then they did a really good job cus you cant tell.

Looks like someone did a good porting job on that. Now swap out the two and get us some performance gains between the two :)

I agree that if that is ported it's a great job, although I can't imagine it's anything other than a ported housing... I am interested if that makes much of a difference in power to port that aggressively.

If someone whet through the effort and expense to do that to the compressor housing, I would imagine there might be other differences too, at least a clipped exhaust wheel and some hotside porting… Also, what hotside is on that turbo? Pictures of the hotside and wheels for comparisons?

Anyone know what the "typical" compressor housing ports look like? Anyone know where that is even available?

Is it just me, or does the inlet also look ported?
The wall looks a little thinner on the left. Plus the addition of the vacuum nipple.
The stock one is on the tube that bolts to the turbo.

I noticed the same thing. Looks like it was really worked over, that is why I was asking about the other aspects of the turbo as I would suspect other modifications too...



I have to say the more I look at that housing it looks a tad different (some areas look bigger when looking at the sections of the scroll, could be the angle of the photo... :)

Thats definitely custom... Can you read the info on the cover itself (the flat region at the bottom?) It looks alot like what I've seen on the JDM MR compressor cover I had gotten, only the vacuum fitting is definitely an addon.. But it definitely looks like it was very neatly honed, the reason I said honing over porting is that its perfectly smooth and symmetrical in the outlet..

I'd also like to see the pipe it was feeding. The compressor housing discharge is ported so large that it looks like you would need a custom discharge pipe to keep from having a rather large step.

^ i'd like to see that too... i'd also like to see someone that can do this!

Anyone who was ever good at aluminum porting can do this... however, it does no good to go larger than the discharge pipe that the turbo bolts too. I bet it would be pretty interesting to see the difference between that compressor cover with a properly sized discharge pipe against an OE compressor cover and pipe! The results could really go either way...

well the big deal is that i believe something like this would actually increase spool up... much like the 9 compressor housin's larger diffuser... you'd basically be diffusing the air faster which would then build pressure faster.

just a thought.
