Don't forget the JDM close-ratio gear box!!

I just got the JDM 4th/5th gear in today. The lower ratio 4/5 should hopefully drop 1/4 mile times by 0.2 sec. :)

Cheers,

Tell me the ratio and I will plug it into my data sheet! I also have data for the HKS 4.111 final drive and the 3.84 final drive ratio that is available.

Very cool data acquisition..:)

1.096 4th, 0.825 5th. I'm not even sure if the gears will drop in. If they don't I have some ideas to get it to work (we've done the same thing with some other transmissiones such as Subaru 5mt). I'll keep everyone posted. :)

This is assuming you are running stock sized tires on each car. New info added, "JDM CR" means JDM close ratio 5 speed.

For gas milage considerations, here is a break down top gear RPM at various cruiseing speeds on the highway.

Looking at the data, for anyone trapping above 125 that wants to limit max RPM to a reasonable level (8000 or so) these gears from Gruppe-S would be perfect! For anyone running stock block, or built stroker but making heavy power this gear set should improve 1/4 mile times while making highway driving unbearable! Can you imagine a long highway trip spent at 4200 RPM? I would be deaf at the end of the trip :)

Looks like if you are trapping under 112 mph they will help your 1/4 mile times, or if you are trapping more than 125 mph they will help your 1/4 mile times..... but in between 112 mph and 125 mph trap speeds you will be making an extra gear change that would not be required with the stock VIII gear set, so it may slow you down a bit.

I just noticed something...... the JDM close ratio 5 speed gears give it ratios VERY similar to the first 5 gears in the six speed MR transmission. This may help explain Warrtalons extrodinary drag times..... if the close ratio 5 speed would gain you 2 tenths in the 1/4 mile, and the MR has very similar ratios for the first 5 gears it would make sence that the MR would be faster in the 1/4 mile (with a good driver) than a regular EVO with the same driver.

Very nice Keith. I have often wondered about the 4.111 gear set. Thats a nice jump 125 mph in 4th. I think I need this now.

TrinaBabe Jul 14, 2006 11:27 AM

The problem with lowering the speed / raising the RPM in 4th is you run out of gear extremely fast. I am spinning my puny little car to 8,100+ through the traps already. Thats with stock Evo 8 gears. I couldn't imagine making that even worse.

You are already on the verge of having to shift into 5th. When you reach that point where you have to shift into 5th anyway, the new shorter ratio gears (or the 1-5 in the 6 speed) will become an advantage.
