Blown turbo on a STOCK evo 9! Please Help! *pics inside*

4 Attachment(s)
Let me start by saying that I am totally at a loss at what happened.
My evo 9 is COMPLETELY stock. Only 4K miles on the ODO.

I was driving normally 1st gear/ 2nd gear shift, boosting at around 1 bar max. I suddenly hear a slight thud, and the car just drops boost suddenly.

I was trying to rev but the car wouldn't rev above 3K and speed wouldn't go up more than 50 mph, and there was a whining sound.

Long story short, I checked the turbo and found that the blades on the intake side were massacred. But the exhaust side was quite ok (except for one chipped corner of a blade). The Piping was filled with oil, but there was no smoke. Surprisingly the car was starting, idling fine with no smoke.

Please answer my questions if possible:

1) What could the reasons be for a stock turbo on a stock car to be damaged like this?

2) What things should I change now that it has been damaged?

3) Could the broken parts of the turbo cause any problem when I get a new turbo and if so, what should I do?

NOTE: Pls bear in mind that the mitsu dealer here has no clue about this car and I will have to do the repair job myself with some knowledgable local mechanics and YOU GUYS (Your advice).

if your car is stock than why did you take it apart, warrenty???

KOEvo Aug 7, 2006 12:22 PM

That's crazy. All i can really say is that it's time for a turbo upgrade, since you odviously don't have a warrenty.

Ultimateone Aug 7, 2006 12:22 PM

Maybe something got stuck in there, even something miniscule can do big damage.

He is in Bangladesh dude, odviously if the dealer doesn't even know how to fix the car they aren't going to offer a warrenty.

sorry to hear that but on a better note time to upgrade to a bigger turbo. Also can I buy you wastegate actuator?

talon2evo Aug 7, 2006 12:25 PM

Looks like a faulty impeller wheel. It looks like it just exploded. The fins oppposite the broken side look ok, & if something like a nut or bolt got in there, all the fins would be beat to hell.

I'd say this is a warranty item.

1. Do you have a boost controller?

2. If you do, did the dealership see the boost controller?

3. Do you have an aftermarket air cleaner on the car?

4. If you do, did the dealership SEE the aftermarket air cleaner?

If the car is totally stock, with stock air cleaner, & stock boost control system, then have the dealer fix it. That's why the warranty is there.

Guys, just to make clear, I am from BANGLADESH. Here the dealer knows NOTHING about evo. and there are only 3 evo in the whole country.

Again, I would like to hear some answers on the questions I posted. Thanks.

sorry to hear about that bro. It could have been anything. manufactuer defect maybe... i know its a long shot, but its possible. maybe there was some small debris in the intake track. something extremely small can wreak havok in that area. Was the car brought over to where you're at brand new? are you the original owner?

As for what to do, time for an upgrade for sure. for sizes and power levels, i suggest the search feature. The car idles fine, and everything, so im guessing theres no pieces inside the motor to worry about?

NM didnt see you were from bangladesh. Then again i would try to contact Mitsubishi corporate office (the closest one near you) and tell them of the failure to see if they can help.

CHAMAMA,

I have had cathastropic turbo failures in the past but your issues is very rare. I agree with Talon2evo it sounds to me that you had a defective compressor wheel. The other blades are not damaged.

You can rebuild that turbo but you should get a new one though. The warranty should take care of it since it has such low miles.

If you change the air filter maybe got into the piping however it has to go through the MAF first.

You need to clean and verify that no other broken parts made it to the intercooler piping.

Sorry to hear that!!

that is wild looking time to call ams!

McDougal Aug 7, 2006 12:51 PM

You people need to read his entire first post to see that his dealer will not be able to fix the issue because they are not knowledgeable with regard to EVOs. Duh!

I don't know what to tell you regarding the turbo issue as I am no expert, I just cant stand when people people reply without reading the whole post.

Kee1pride Aug 7, 2006 12:53 PM

I'd guess something along the lines of defect as well but it would be a guess at best. Best of luck to you and time to buy an upgrade =\

Kevin
