turbo hx40 q's

Well ive asked a few people and they said they dont know, but im gonna be using a holset hx40 turbo on my srt4 and was wondering why i havent seen any evos upgrade to this turbo and all i know the turbo is capable of 650+ hp just wondering and it gets full spool fast just wondering is their any1 using it or has used it?

go_evo_go Mar 28, 2007 09:48 AM

good question, never even heard of this turbo. Most run the 37r or even 40r for those numbers. Might be good on a stroked out evo. Post a link if you could.

That is a big turbo.

It seems impossible to find a compressor map of this beast. Its flow rating of 0.53kg/s should be in the range of like 70lb/min of flow. It also seems to be a journal bearing which probably is going to mean slower response when you put your foot down.

This turbo looks like it was designed for a diesel truck, makes me wonder how it will take the higher exhaust temps of a gas car.

LILKEEZY2003 Mar 28, 2007 07:37 PM

well it was on a diesel bus...but most older dsm eclipses use this turbo...its supposed to outspool most turbos..and is supposed to outspool and outpower a 35r from what ive been hearing i know they come in dsm flanges and t3 flanged im just wondering cause i know alot of older dsms use this turbo well why hasnt an evo used it yet?

I have used this turbo on my Evo. It made 521 HP @ 27-28 PSI to the wheels in a Bullseye Power DSM housing on an internal wastegate. I really liked it but I upgraded to an S366 on a TiAL 44mm wastegate.

interesting stuff.....good to see people doing something other then the NORM as well.

521whp at 27psi is no slouch, but I would like to see the dyno chart to see how it spools and such.

Curious to know what the spool up is like, its pretty hard to find information on this turbo even on DSM forums.

+1 for more info. Also dyno sheets if possible.

The pulls were done on a dynapack dyno. The car is my 05 which had a stock shortblock with HKS 280s, cast manifold, HKS DLI-II, AEM EMS, Injen exhaust, 850cc injectors, Walbro 255HP, GRE Performance Race FMIC. The internal gate was mounted on the O2 housing which seemed to flimsy for the high pressure actuator. On the dyno the spool seemed to be slow and I was shooting for over 30 psi. After I took the car off of the dyno I found that the bracket had loosened up a bit which was cracking the gate open because average spool time to 20psi on the street was about 4000 RPM's and on the dyno it was coming in at 5000 RPM's.

not bad if your getting boost at 4k with such a large turbo.

Edit:
The graph on the dyno is hideous on spool up. Its a shame you don't have one of after the WG fixed.

this turbo is way to large for a 2.0L i was going to try and fab up a kit for my old 5.4L: mustang. IMO

looks like your driving with a light switch instead of a gas petle

I ran a modified Holsett HX-40 on my 5.9 L. Dodge Ram 2500 Cummins turbodiesel for a while. It started to spool at about 2400 RPM, but with a squirt of alcohol at 11 PSI, it reached full boost(38#-42#) by 3700 RPM. Now, remember this is on an engine with 3 times the displacement of an Evo. Personally, I would say that this turbo is way big for a 2.0L. motor. It'll spool like a dog.

If you are seriously considering it however, you might wanna get in touch with Piers at Piers Diesel Research(PDR), as he can configure the HX-40 in a number of different ways and/or upgrade your existing HX-40 so that it can live at higher shaft speeds.

The problem with the stock Holsett HX-40 as it came fitted on the 12V Cummins ¨B¨ equipped yellow school buses, is inadequate oiling to the journal bearings and resultant bearing failures at higher shaft speeds and increased boost levels. PDR upgrades the HX-40 for high boost applications by improving oil delivery passages, fitting larger bearings and dynamic balancing the CHRA.

The PDR HX-35 with a 12 or 9 cm exhaust housing might be a better alternative than the HX-40 for a 2-Liter, though. Or there are hybrid HX40/35 turbos that mate the 40 compressor side to the faster spooling HX-35 turbine wheel. I still think that you may be barking up the wrong tree though.

FWIW, there is another guru, a sort of mythical turbo builder, who goes by the name of Pius, that puts together most of the exotic Switzer and Holsett competition turbo hybrids for the tractor sled pulling rigs. This Pius fellow is based somewhere in the Central Valley of California, I think. He may be able to help out as well.

If you need more info, PM me. Incidentally, I have a perfectly fine, lo-mile, personal PDR HX-40 for sale:)

well the turbo i got was for my srt but not no more its a hx40 with a clipped wheel 6 blade instead of 8 and also with a bep housing spool was on a different car on a 2.4 stock block at 3500...so mayb mid 4000 in a 2.0..i kno the turbo makes power just wanted to see if any1 actually used it...

LILKEEZY2003 Mar 31, 2007 05:56 PM

i also have my hx40 brand new 0 miles on it as of now..has a t3 flange on it...for 720 obo...turbo is updated.,..
