what's the + & - of the 6 speed MR trans?
how weak is the 6 speed? or is it strong? anyone
|
Many threads on this subject, try searching.
|
its not weak, wtf, theres only 2 people i know of that the 6 spd, which is 4th gear failed, warrtalon and his friend, and they overheatted the gear most likly, going back and forth between 3rd and 4th,
peoples 5 spd trannies give out all the time... |
but is it strong can it take abuse?
|
Do you really think anyone can answer this question?? Not tryin to be a dick, but come on, please think before you post.
If you can drive a stick, have the fluids changed regularly, and treat it well, it will last.

Pro: 1 more gear to cruise in....therefore lower RPM when highway driving
Con: 1 more gear to shift into when "spiritedly" driving |
From what I read it is strong, but does get hotter than hell.
Its only an issue if you road race and have your car extremely modified for more power. If you do road race alot you should at least get a tranny cooler to at least help a little. |
This will be depending on how are you going to drive the car. If you will use it in 1/4 mile you are most likely going to shift until 5th gear. Otherwise 6 speed tranny is very nice in daily driving and freeway. Regarding the question "will it last?", this will depend on how you will drive and take care of it. Everyone knows that when we bought our cars, some will get weak parts and some will get pretty tough ones. We all use the same engine but some blows in the first 6k miles without pushing it and some last god knows how long and stands any punishment. In short its like a box of chocolate you will never know what you are gonna get.:)

Please read the huge threads where we've already discussed this ad nauseam. I can tell you right away that Clutchdc5 is wrong. It has been a lot more than 2 of us, and it had absolutely nothing to do with shifting back and forth from 3rd to 4th. I have no idea where he came up with that lame-brained idea. In fact, my fourth gear basically disintegrated while in gear and accelerating with my meager 300whp/330wtq.
Gears 1-3 appear to be very strong, but gears 4-6 are very small and weak. |
warr, what fluid were you running? was it factory or an exact equivilent? if not, maybe that had something to do with it. i know razorlab was using BG.
pro-shifts much smoother that the 5-speed. |
I was using BG II, and we do think that had something to do with the failure due to overheating.
|
i use this fluid that is repackaged and sold by mopar dealers. it's actually castrol syntorq LT(very popular in europe and racing), an exact equivilent 75-85 GL-4 that is full synthetic. mopar sells it for the NV4500 tranny(cummins deisel 5-speed)because it has a cast iron case and this fluid is supposed to be able to protect against extreme pressure and heat. i've run it for around 40K miles with no problems, though i haven't done any road racing yet to test.

Well, I wouldn't expect you to have problems with ANY normal fluid if you're not racing...

also consider this fact
many more five speed tranny evos than six speed so of course the amount of five speed issues will be higher I primarily daily drive my MR and have zero issues |
