waste gaste q's

i have a tail waste gate on my gt30R setup and it has a Vishnu custom exhaust where the waste gate dumps in to the exhaust. i was wondering if it would hurt or help to weld up the exhaust and run a new dump tube elsewhere

not sure why just wanna do something different.

It will make your car a lot louder under WOT/boost, it will free up hp up top as well, no real downside besides the noise...

Do you have any pics of the current Vishnu WG plumbing setup?

Powerwise I'd guess that you'd be better off welding shut the DP, and just going VTA with the gate. Noisewise, it might scare you the first time you hear the WG venting though. I know that the VTA Deltagate on my Buick scared the cr*p out of me the 1st time that I heard it cracking open at 21 PSI. It's better than those twerpy BOV noises though.

LOL i think im going to route it out the side and give it a go. i dont know why but im looking for the loud ass gush of exhaust gas...

thanks for the help guys.

open dump tube is awsome

more power + more noise

03lan-evo Aug 24, 2007 12:35 PM

how does it = more power just by opening the dump tube? will i have to tune this thing if i do this?

more room for the exhaust gas to exit through the exhaust bc with an ewg the air no longer travels through the exhaust and frees up more room. Free flowing exhaust=more power

i thought about that but didnt really think it would make that big of a difference.

riceball777 Aug 24, 2007 03:16 PM

open dump tube makes the total exhaust system bigger and its more free flowing.

= to more power but it will sound like a open downpipe every time you hit full boost

will it sound loud at full boost or when i shift from full boost? i thought it was only oopen when i shift(ie. let off the boost)

The wastegate doesn´t open, or close for that matter, when you shift. The diverter(compressor bypass) valve is the one that opens when you lift the gas pedal and the throttle plate shuts.

oh **** dont flame me but what is the diverter? i thought that when you let off the throttle the wastegate opened and that was the gush of exhaust that was heard.

yes i am a pritty new guy so im not sure what some stuff is. turbo wise ive been wrenching for years tho mainly NA cars

The diverter valve(DV) also known as blow off valve(BOV), or compressor bypass valve, vents excess boost pressure which builds up in the intake system when the throttle plate is closed. The wastegate on the other hand, serves a similar, equivalent function by ventimg excess exhaust gases from withtin the turbine housing(integral wastegate) or from inside the exhaust manifold (external wastegate).

Ideally, they both function in harmony to maintain boost levels within the intake and exhaust tracts at your preset level. Maybe someone else will chime in and give you a more complete description of the workings of these two valves.

Sorry, no flame intended:)
