The official hyundai 2.4L G4JS (4G64) thread
I've noticed that there really isn't much information out there regarding the hyundai version of the 4G64 (G4JS). These blocks are available for very cheap in junkyards, and you can find them in the following hyundai vehicles:
2001 - 2003 Hyundai Santa Fe 1999 - 2001 Hyundai Sonata The engine looks almost exactly the same as the 4G64 found in later model Galants, except it comes with a DOHC 16V head just like the Evo. I wonder if anyone has tried using the G4JS head or block yet in their Evo? It should be noted that there are some slight differences that I have noticed: -The head lacks the tap for the turbo oil supply, but it looks like it can easily be tapped into. -The dip stick tube comes out in front of the block in between the powersteering pump and the exhaust manifold here are some pics of the engine: http://www.sonataspeed.com/members/images/dman12.jpg http://www.sonataspeed.com/members/i...0331071634.JPG http://www.sonataspeed.com/members/i...331071634a.JPG Any thoughts on this? |

Guys on club3g.com have been doing this for a while already. I actually have this head my self and its going onto a 64 block in a very near future. I can't tell you anything about the block thats on that pos hyundai. All I know is that cams/springs/valves/cam gears are all different. The head minus the turbo oil feed is the same.

Lucas over at English racing built what I believe is a newer Galant 2.4L block in a hybrid setup on a local EVO that is running our turbo kit. He filled me in a little on it because I was interested were my motor ever to let go. The block is far less expensive and easier to get a hold of than an EVO 4G63 so it was a fair bit of savings for the build. That car is making just shy of 600whp and is driven hard regularly so that seems to be a great option. It appears that the bottom of the Hyundai motors would work as well. Give Lucas a call, I'm sure he will know the answers to all of your questions regarding such a Frankenstein :)

As for the block, I know for sure that it has the exact same bore, stroke, and dimensions as the 4G64's everyone's been running. Seems like its just another alternative to the 4G64 (its easier to find in my opinion!) |
The valvecover is not the same. The bolt holes dont line up. Also a plus to this over the evo head is that the hyundai head has a bigger cup size therefore creating a lower compression. Valves/cams are not the same quality as the evo ones. I'm actually replacing them with supertech ones. Also the cam gear teeth are more spread out then the evo ones.

Sorry but these are the only pics I have of this while this head was still together. The stock evo intake mani/exhaust bolts right on.

BTW the valves are exactly the same size as the evo ones and the springs are weak as hell.

goosey2099 you are the man! Thanks for posting!! There is ALOT of useful information in this thread so far! So basically we know that the head is exactly the same, but in order to run it you need:
-the new cam reluctor (inside the cam angle sensor) -better valve springs -turbo oil supply needs to be drilled and tapped -turbo camshafts Sounds like a nice port and polish project to me! =) Now if only anyone had some detailed pics of the G4JS block! |
what kind of pictures do you need i have one of those block sitting in my storage i got a complete sonata engine for 250 haha that block is going to a scrap metal place so i can get some of my money back

Does block have oil squirters? The early non turbo blocks did not. I would never build a block without oil squirters but they can be added as well.
