Friend's Evo, Tcase cracked in half.

Do you think JB Weld would fix this? -Joke. Car was still drivable after this happened, at least for a few blocks to where the flatbed could pick it up. So guys, is this typical carnage? Also, if this is sent to Shep would this be eligible for rebuild rates vs a new Tcase? I've found a few used ones but maybe this car needs a stronger tcase. Specifically what causes the case to break in half like this? (exploding dff? but then why would it drive afterwards?).

Also, owner wondered if he could possibly get warranty replacement? Thoughts? This is a Evo IX MR with 7K miles.

How high was he revving it when the clutch was dropped?

SickSilverNLow Aug 12, 2007 01:35 PM

Wheel hop?

Mr. Evo IX Aug 12, 2007 01:55 PM

no hop, 6K, sticky track, Exedy twin, 370whp / 360tq measured with DLL. Wanted to see what the consensus was and if this is common carnage. I thought the IX's had a limited slip in front... seems like it would have held up a little better. I guess everything has it's breaking point. It was a quest for low 12's.

So does anyone know if this qualify's for Shep's rebuild rates? And thanks to everyone who has PM'd transfer case replacements, if he doesnt go with a upgraded case he'll be buying one from a member.

alexsracing Aug 12, 2007 02:05 PM

he had also run 4 other times that night with wheel hop

red03evo Aug 12, 2007 02:07 PM

wow, hope everything works out for him

well something must have gone really wrong! it doesn't make sense to crack open the transfer case like that!

i mean burning the clutch ok... breaking ring-pinion ok... breaking teeth from gears ok... even damaging input shafts ok... but breaking the tc in half, i think its the 2nd or 3rd i have seen all this time that i am involved with the EVO community...

maybe factory defect???

SickSilverNLow Aug 12, 2007 02:15 PM

Its gotta be some kind of a factory defect...i seen many evos in 11s and such with nothing like that happening ever to any of them . Good luck.

Yeah thats pretty much a warranty issue.........

/sarcasm

Mr. Evo IX Aug 12, 2007 02:31 PM

I'm thinking it wont be taken in for warranty repair. Pretty much pointless and a waste of time.

that would have been a lot better than the t-case

VIPGarage Aug 12, 2007 02:53 PM

holy crap. i've seen a lot of horrible t-cases come through the shop but i have never ever seen something to that extent. I almost want to say well done for really breaking something like no one else has......

hope he can find a good solution to meet his needs.

WickedWhtMR Aug 12, 2007 02:59 PM

that has to be a manufactures defect... the case itself is defective... the case is not a moving part and if it has never been removed... it cant really be denied as warrenty
