4G64 block w/ 4G63 MIVEC head

6 Attachment(s)
I am going to build a 4G64 w/ a 4G63 Mivec head, but have a few questions about the 4G64 blocks. How many variations of the 4G64 blocks are there? Which blocks with work with the Evo head?

I have the opportunity to pick up a 4G64 from a Montero Sport. The engine is a16 valve SOHC with the numbers 4N and RK5 on the block and G6NFR1 on the head. I have attached pictures. Will this block work?

Any input is greatly appreciated.

The 4G64 long block (will it work?)

Yes it will work. Will need a water pump adaptor though and run the 63 water pump. Besides that you will need either a Cometic or other custom head gasket. Also will need the machinist to drill and tap the oil gallys if you want to run oil squirters. Besides that you should be good to go.

EDIT: Also will need to drill and tap a oil source for the MIVEC head.

So all the head bolt and engine mount locations are the same?

Machine work isn't a problem, I have a Bridgeport mill in my garage.

Isnt there some differences in the water gallery's? I m not sure its just something ive heard:)

Maybe you're thinking of the oil drainbacks? I know in some cases a few oil drainback holes need to be plugged.

So, how has this come along, have you started on it already?

I have the head off the 4G64 and am doing some research on the block. I have been told that the orientation of the intake/exhaust ports will determine whether or not the block will work. For example, some early Galants had the exhaust on the firewall side, but the later was on the grill side. I'm not sure if there is really a difference, but am trying to be sure before machining the block.

Anyone want to chime in?

you need a block from a 99+ Galant /00+ eclipse. Everything before that was a reversed.

Great, thanks for the input. Anyone need an earlier block?

nah, had it been a week ago, I would've said yeah, but I'm working on SC300.

The 4G64 block with a Mivec Head is an awesome combo, I have done some engine calibration for a setup with custom cams and that combo and it ended up being a very efficient engine setup. Good luck!

Hey SeanC keep us updated with this project. I once wanted to do this project, it seems that you have more resources. Im just doing the Non Mivec swap instead. Good Luck with the project!
