MBCs: What you don't like

Can everyone please chime in on what you do, or don't like about the various Manual Boost Controllers that you've used out on the market.

You don't have to single out any brand, per se. Just drop your .02 on what features you liked and didn't like. MBCs are pretty simple, but I'm sure that everyone has their own opinions.

A good example is: Even though there are many clicks available, I never really know where my last setting was on my MBC. Or, Mine never came with a bracket to mount it anywhere, etc.

Hallman - I like it's overall performance (it does need to be cleaned every two years or so, at least mine did.)

Forge - Horrible - no boost control - hit 30 psi with it turned all the way out. Returned it to Forge. (I did try the cleaning and greasing technique but it didn't work.)

Hallmans are pretty accurate unlike Forge which has very inconsistent spikes.

Synapse Feb 8, 2008 11:14 AM

was the Forge an interrupt style, or a bleeder style?

Anything to be said about the adjustment styles you liked? Or didn't like? Ability to lock settings, etc.

I love my buschur inline MBC never had any spikes and it holds what i set it to.

neutral colors -- silver-grey-black

solid Detent Clicks on the knob- no locknut required

small size

engraving/marking for input/output & if used, bleed ports

Threaded ports W multiple size inserts for varying hose dia requirments/prefrences

one of my personal pet peeves W manual boost controllers is that they tend to vary boost pressure as the temperature changes, most likely due to the spring weakening as the temp goes up & stiffening as the temp goes down....

Big threads are sometimes tough, due to the small size of the MBCs and the little bit of material there is to thread into. But I think different hose sizes are definitely doable.

Engineering the spring's specs are very important. If you don't get the material and heat treatment right for the application, you'll see exactly what you describe.

I've used the Turboxs, Forge, Hallman, Ams, Dejon and one i made at home depot..

I've had all 3 hallmans on my car and the hallman pro is the best followed by hallman es then hallman pro rx.. The pro rx has very touchy when ajusting boost so changes in weather affect it. The more turns it takes to adjust boost the more stable it is. The hallman es is just as good as the hallman pro but is a pain to adjust.

Ams, Dejon and the homemade one were all great.. Just not as stable as the Hallman in differen weather.. 0 spiking which is great.

Turbo xs and Forge are garbage... They spike a lot and when there are changes in weather boost varies alot... Who cares about clicking with the forge... a good mbc never needs to be touched after being installed and if you do for some reason u just count turns.

Hallman pro alllllllll daaay, allll nighhht

Good info, now your making me want to ditch my Forge, although I have never had a problem with it...

if you are able to get 1/8 Npt threaded ports you can supply 1/16-1/8 & 1/4 hose ends as the inside Dia on a 1/4 hose matches up to a 1/8 Npt, just dont get el cheapo brand or they may not have a smooth inner bore

another point you may want to look into is some sort of radiator mount & spec'ing your spring to match that temperature window as it varies less with ambient conditions & not many people go full boost when the engine isint warmed up. i use a Perrin MBC setup like this & it does help to smooth out any variances due to temperature. works great on the street, but when i am at the track & the under hood & coolant temps creep above their normal range then i start to see some fluctuation. probably due to the aluminum body of the MBC & a spring that was not spec'd for temps that high......

Hallman pro from day 1. Zero regrets. Even with ecu-based boost control, never looking back.

Joe P. MBC 4 - Life

3 different types to choose from and they are all superb, I use the XZ - been good to me for 6 years and 3 different turbo cars. Has never needed serviced or cleaned, it just works day in and day out and I will use nothing else but the joe p. units.

but Joe P. doesn't get any love in evo-land. {thumbdwn}

I have the forge unos and have had no issues at all. I have seen no spikes and have never touched it since I installed and set it a year ago. I know some of the first ones had issues with the polishing compound getting into the small passages and caused some people problems. I have not seen any of these issues. I do know that the guys over at forge are great to deal with and that is a big plus in my book. I can not speek for any of the others as I have no personal experience.
Good luck if you have nay questions please feel free to pm me.
