Evo Turbo Information
Got some of this info from a :mitsu: brochure. Some of this may have been posted here before but here goes:

Compressor = Aluminium, 68mm wide Evolution MR aka "8.5" GSR = TD05HR-16G6-10.5T or TD05HRA-16G6-10.5T (Ti Alloy option) RS = 6MT:TD05HRA-16G6-10.5T or 5MT:TD05HRA-16G6-9.8T Nozzle Area (cm2) = 10.5 or 9.8(RS-5speed) Compressor = Aluminium, 68mm wide All Evo 4-8 Turbos are twin scroll designs meaning that the engines exhaust is divided into two channels (see first pic). As the engine exhausts in pulses.. its supposed to result in quicker spooling. From the Evo 4 onwards, the Turbo spins in the opposite direction, i.e. Anticlockwise (hence the R in the turbo name). The Titanium Alumnide alloy used in the RS/RS2 and some GSRS (factory option) has less inertia and thus spins up around 500 rpm sooner. These Titanium turbos can be indentified by the A in their name. |

These last 2 pics are from Heave-Ho6's Evo 6 again from the MLR. On the 7 & 8 the space seems to be a little more cramped... I find it difficult to see the reading on my car. :crap:

I came across this in the jdm Evo 8 brochure and it kinda surprised me as I always thought the Evo's Turbo was oil cooled alone!
Thanks to Josh (ShapeGSX) for clearing this up for me: "Yes, the Evo's turbo is water cooled. Oil cools it too, obviously. You would probably have a hard time finding a non-water-cooled turbo on a production car these days. Hell, even the 16G I have on my car (from an Evo III) is water cooled. ... the center section (where the bearings are) is actively cooled" |

Where can we get the titanium turbos and how much are they. I'd love to spool about 500 RPM's sooner. {devil}

The H in TD05H stands for High Flow.
I lied about the turbo I have. Looks like it is from an Evo 1 or 2. I have a 7cm TD05H-16G 60mm. I just bought an Evo III 16G, though. I should be installing it on Saturday. The Evo III 16G was just "discovered" in the US a little while ago. It has a better 7cm housing than DSM guys are used to. It is made of a better alloy (doesn't crack). The wastegate port is relocated for better boost control. The compressor is also slightly larger than the big 16G that we have always got. For the Evo 8's TD05HR-16G6-9.8T turbo, Vishnu found this on examination of the stock car :
"Boost pressures also met expectations with a whopping 19 PSI of peak boost, tapering down to 16 PSI by 7000RPM. As far as we know, this is more boost than any other currently produced turbo car." Max flow rate/ HP = (505cfm) = ~375-400 HP depending on who you talk to for the standard Evo turbo 16g6 compressor wheel. The smaller 9.8cm2 housing will mean that the 7 and 8 turbos will not flow as much air as the V/VI's at high rpms. Low end torgue is improved however. |

From reports, it appears that the titanium turbo (more so than the inconnel version) does not react well to high boost levels with poor petrol. This happened to a guy who leaned-out on croation unleaded (?octane):
