Journal Bearing 60-1: How do they Perform ? and what do they compare to ?
 
I have a local friend here that has a brand new 60-1 journal bearing garret turbo. He bought it brand new and it was actually customized to spool faster with a smaller turbine housing or a/r(which ever it was).

Anyway Im wondering what this turbo compares too and if its worth buying? Or better yet if anyone knows anyone running one or where i can find some specs on it.

p.s probably get the turbo for like 700-800 brand new still never used.

Good turbo. I think its bigger than a 3076r and smaller than a 35r. Its good all around turbo. I have friend who has one on his audi and is putting down over 400 to the wheels.

Im just curious as to why we dont see more of them if there a in between roads turbo ?

Is there bad surging with it anyone know ? Or is just not worth having seeing its not ball bearing and its not a 35R. lol.

You don't see a lot of them because they're just older technology. They work okay, but the newer turbos will beat that one every time all things equal.

And I would imagine a smaller turbine housing would cause slower spool. If anything you would want a ported housing with a larger wheel.

with the 60-1 compressor housing and a smaller turbine housing will make it spool faster. Hence the 3065 with a 35R compressor and 30R turbine.

It makes the turbo less efficient at a certain lvl of boost also so not to sure about that one either.

The 60-1 and 62-1 are best suited for larger displacement engines (e.g. V8) with high compression, that won't be seeking more than 15psi or so from the turbo. If you compare the 60-1 to a GT35R, you will see that both compressors are roughly 65 lb/min, but the 35R's efficiency islands extend to much higher pressure ratios. For an EVO, a 35R is a superior turbo.

Thank you Ted. I knew there had to be some kind of catch as to why you dont see this turbo more often in the evo community.

Looks like it'll be the 35R then. Same kid has a 35R also up for sale. lol. He bought the 60-1 first and must have found out its not as efficient for a 4cyl as the 35R.

The 60-1 was always kinda laggy for HP it made. It was popular before the GT series came out. Definitely old school but effective if lag isnt an issue.

i use to run that in my boosted integra.
it made great power and was a very affordable turbo

its sort of like a non ball bearing gt35 minus about 75 hp with a little more lag. kind of like an sc61

They seem to run out of air around 530whp in my experience on most 2.0/2.3 combos from the DSM days. I have seen them on bigger motors (2.8 VR6) make a little more power but not much. They are nice since the cost about 75 to rebuild not counting new wheels and such. I thought they had a 60# wheel in them but maybe not. I tuned one not too long ago (last week) and it seemed really decent actually. It wasnt a big cover turbo but it spooled 25psi by 4300 or so and made 30 by 4600 so I wouldnt call it horrible.

i had a sc61 trim and the turbo made more power then my gt35 but the lag was very bad unless u get the bbsc61 or 61trim BB u will see full boost around 5800rpms
