Kelford TX272's
Hey All.
Im looking at getting some Kelford TX272's, and adjustable cam gears. But my tuner/mechanic seems to think that it will be no good on the stock valvetrain as they are potentially too aggressive. He believes that profiles no bigger then the HKS range should be put on an Evo 8 with stock valve train. Be believes the Evo 9 valve train is fine for Cosworth M2's, etc but the Evo 8 is restricted to HKS?! I have no intrest in running over 7000rpm at all, and will probebly get my tuner to set my rev limiter at 7200rpm just in case... Thoughts? Does anyone else these are too aggressive for the stock valve train? Regards, Alex |
I personally dont think youll have an issue with the Kelford 272's on stock valvetrain.. You could always drop in some GSC beehive springs with stock retainers for extra peace of mind.. We have sold that combination to several people with great success.. Any questions feel free to PM me..

If your worried about the stock valvetrain just upgrade it, its not that big of a deal.

My mechanic also believes that on the evo 8, you cant just 'drop in' springs. You have to modifey the spring seats... >_<

on "most" 272 cams you should be alright if your not revving above the stock rev limiter.

sounds like you need to find a new mechanic. lol But really he is just trying to do it the right way, i would just save up and then get it done.

Ok guys.
Another call to my mechanic. Apparently my car does not run the same valvetrain configuration as your cars. The USDM Evo 8 head is based off an Evo 7, which uses fully size valve springs. The JDM Evo 8 Head uses a tapered spring design, which means to fit aftermarket springs, I DO need the spring seat to be modifiyed and I also need retainers to suit... Hmmmm. |

Im not too keen on doing all of that just of yet. I jsut want to drop in some cams..
Will do giving the head the works when timing belt is due. Port/Polished New Valve Guides Springs/Retainers New Spring Seats New Timing Belt I hope that the Kelfords are not too wild for the standard valvetrain... |

I have the kelford 272s on my car. Its an evo 9 but i left the stock valvetrain intact and i dont rev about the stock rev limiter. Sean Ivey said it should be fine and i trust him

Ok Guys. I bit the bullet.
Kelford TX272 + Fidanza Adjustable cam gears on the way. Hope these will make me some good power. Im also pulling the stock rev limiter back to 7,100rpm as a 'just in case' measure as the stock valve springs on the JDM 8 are very poor. Hopfully they will make better power then HKS 272's.. Even On a mildly Modded Car. My Mods are; -Flash Tune -HKS EVC 6 -Walbro 255l/hr -Gruppe M Ram Air intake System -Hypertec Suction Pipe -Modified J Speed Twin Dump + Front Pipe Setup -MIL.SPEC 100 cell Cat -Custom 3" Stainess Cat-Back Exhaust |

just search, I found a few threads dedicated to your topic, I was looking at them this afternoon |
^ That topic doesnt really apply to me, as I own a JDM Evo 8. The JDM head design is much different to the USDM head.
The JDM uses a Cone like spring and the USDM does not as it is based off an EVO 7 head. Thanks for the link though. It is a very informative read. Im going to ask my mechanic/tuner if he can locate any drop in springs for a JDM E8. If not, Im just going to have to run standard valvetrain and rev limit to 7,100rpm.. |
