5 to 6 speed conversion........

I have an evo 8 with the 5 speed tranny. I love it, dont get me wrong, but i was pondering in my mind that a 6 speed would work. I've only heard one other person doing this but this was a while back. Has anyone heard bout this and could this be done? That other guy that did it i dont know if it worked for him or not....

OhsixIXBish Dec 15, 2008 11:07 AM

Y do you want a six speed?

hennessey01 Dec 15, 2008 11:26 PM

I remember the guy telling me that his car is a daily driver.....that he uses it for travel along with the track. I was just thinking how much better would the 6 speed do over the 5 speed, and if they are any pros and cons to doing this swap? I do like my 5 speed, and its very rare i travel in it, but if i have to its 273 miles at about 85 to 90 miles an hour.....the car is running at 4000rpms constant......

Erik@MIL.SPEC Dec 15, 2008 11:28 PM

I have 100,000 miles on my 6 speed. Don't listen to Warrtalon ;)

smack_evo Dec 16, 2008 02:10 AM

not sure why you couldn't. i swapped to a 5 from my 6 and it all worked fine.
off the top of my head you'll need cables, console, shifter housing, electronic plug on trans(i forget what it does-reverse switch maybe). also uses a different clutch.

i swapped mine after breaking two of them.

don't listen to erik, he drives like a girl :)

ArcticSoldier Dec 16, 2008 02:26 AM

theres a thread about people complaining about 6spd and them moving to 5 speed. fact is the 6spd is weaker on 4th 5th 6th gear but if used correctly it will last. before the evo i drove the skyline R33 GTR. during highways i always thought the revs were abit high, 3200rpm+. yes i know these cars are high revving engines but i just like to cruise not to hammer. moving to a R34 gtr was so much better on cruising. though i admit i baby it more.....so i drive like a granny, who's gonna tell me im not driving correctly? i like the 6spd option to be honest, driving these cars you cant complain about petrol. but if your like me and you like to baby your car, take a 6 spd

mr-derer2 Dec 16, 2008 02:31 AM

I have a 2006 mr 6speed trans with all the cables and console. the whole sha-bang. I just did a 5 speed conversion. It has a blown 4th but it has 29k on it and ill give u the whole kit for a really good price and u could just rebuild it. the shop that did the install said about $1500 to remove it, rebuild it and re-install. and they are kinda pricey too. Pm me.

jusa4bngr05mr Dec 16, 2008 02:38 AM

yup yup. did the same swap. I still have the mr trim around my shifter though. I have tried selling my 6spd forever. no dice. I really miss how smooth the 6 shifted though.

hennessey01 Dec 16, 2008 09:32 AM

i understand that in some states the speed limit is a little slower than here.....My reason for traveling is due to my alarm being installed (compustar). The only dealer is over 250 miles away which sucks but i dont mind taking the drive. It's just at 4000 rpms for 3 hours whould kinda hurt me afterwards because i feel as if im wearing the engine more than i should.....I still wanna take my car to the track and all but just for traveling....I would like a 6 speed to keep the rpms down a bit.....

Pure Playaer Dec 16, 2008 09:34 AM

I would possibly be willing to trade you my 6speed for your 5speed.

Mr. Evo IX Dec 16, 2008 10:46 AM

It will fit but it's a ridiculous idea unless you just really want 6 gears. The gear ratios are so close between a VIII 5 speed and a MR 6th gear. Did your realize it's only 100 rpm difference at 85mph?

https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/dr...ix-evo-mr.html

Cali2MDevo8 Dec 16, 2008 10:48 AM

Faust did the conversion up @ CBRD. Its possible.

tobz Dec 16, 2008 10:53 AM

Works fine, easy switch.
Also Mitsubishi has a TSB for the 6 speed. We rebuilt it with more syncros. My customer has around 400 to the wheels and says its never been better.

I called a shop that i frequent and they said the same thing....I thought it was WAY different due to having 6 gears but i guess not......So if the 5 speed is a lot better....why did mitsu put a 6 speed into the mr?

CBRD Dec 17, 2008 07:29 AM

I actually like the 6 speed better than the 5... it just cant take the abuse.

The MR's gear ratio's are closer. It shifts silky smooth, great feeling tranny. Just not worth swapping into a GSR for mileage / rpm concerns. Everyone thinks 6 speed cars have an extra gear on top.. really they have an extra gear in between, it's a common misconception.

As far as the 5 speed being better.. that depends on what your gonna use it for. For a daily driver 350whp car or stock car for that matter, I think the 6 speed is better and nicer. In hindsight with high HP configurations the 5 speed is stronger and doesnt suffer the 4th gear fatique issues, not to mention it's got a longer 4th gear which adds up to substantially better ET's at the drag strip (with higher hp). Mitsubishi doesnt build cars to be modified. They build them just how they are sold. Stock vs Stock the 6 speed cars are nicer and quicker (except RS that has weight savings).

If RPM is your concern you can change the final drive in the 5 speed. TRE and HKS make a taller final drive for the 5 speed.

awdboosted Jan 3, 2009 07:01 AM

Coming from driving a 6 speed converting over to a 5 speed in my MR. I would take the 5 speed over the 6. From what I have observed, there was no advantage in gas mileage and there was soo much shifting. 6 speed drives more like a STI. I like the way the 5 speed shift much better and coming from a DSM that broke sooo many transmissions. I'd rather have the security of a stronger trans.

runovr 33 Jan 9, 2009 05:40 AM

why not change the gear ratio's in the box or the center diff ratio can get a few out ralliart oem

Aar0nsite Apr 9, 2009 10:16 AM

how much would cost the conversion from 6 speed to 5 speed? what shop would u go? Shep or TRE? and how much time would it take approx? and does Shep do the same thing TRE does were they switch out some gears of the VIII for IX and vice versa on others? i personally don't spend much time in the highway but just want to build a reliable 450ishWHP and since tranny is our weak point, then start work there!

and suggestions?
thanks
aaron

Man way can't anyone just make a gearset for a six speed!

fugiwara Apr 30, 2009 04:00 AM

at 60mph the 6 speed is revving 100rpm lower than evo 8 5sp.

bmarshall8 Oct 21, 2009 02:05 AM

6sp VS 5sp

Hey, fellas... I know this thread is a little stale, but I just thought I'd use some mathematics to shed a little light on the RPM difference between the two tranny's at freeway speeds...

Check it out for yourself by using the following Equation: (MPH*single gear ratio*Final Gear Ratio*336/Tire Diameter) to estimate RPM based on Gear Ratio and tire size. My Evo tires are aproximately 25.33" so I'm using that as a fixed variable for the comparisons.

Formula Example for 5th Gear of Evo VIII at 60MPH: 60*.72*4.529*336/25.33=2595 RPM's

Knowing the Gear Ratios for the VIII, IX, and IX MR, plug in the following numbers into the equation...

Evo VIII
Gear, Ratio, Final, Total Gearing
1st 2.93 4.529 12.613265
2nd 1.95 4.529 8.83155
3rd 1.41 4.529 6.539876
4th 1.03 4.529 4.963784
5th 0.72 4.529 3.446569

Evo IX
Gear, Ratio, Final, Total Gearing
1st 2.785 4.529 12.613265
2nd 1.95 4.529 8.83155
3rd 1.444 4.529 6.539876
4th 1.096 4.529 4.963784
5th 0.761 4.529 3.446569

Evo IX MR
Gear, Ratio, Final, Total Gearing
1st 2.909 4.529 13.174861
2nd 1.944 4.529 8.804376
3rd 1.434 4.529 6.494586
4th 1.1 4.529 4.9819
5th 0.868 4.529 3.931172
6th 0.693 4.529 3.138597

RESULTS:
At 60MPH
Evo VIII, 2595 RPM's
Evo IX, 2743 RPM's
Evo IX MR, 2497 RPM's

At 80MPH
Evo VIII, 3460 RPM's
Evo IX, 3657 RPM's
Evo IX MR, 3331 RPM's

At 90MPH
Evo VIII, 3893 RPM's
Evo IX, 4115 RPM's
Evo IX MR, 3747 RPM's

need 5 speed shifter box

I want to convert my evo8 MR 6 speed to 5 speed and need a OEM 5 speed shifter box ??

where to get it ?

any suggestions

mordecaict9a Feb 17, 2010 11:09 AM

I got rid of my 5 speed fo a 6 speed in my time attack car and absolutely love it. The trans is tons better in terms of smooth driving, shifting, just a lot more fun, I also notice a difference on the highway.

6 speed

So do u have to change the clutch if doin a 6 speed conversion? I checked the part number @ summit and they were the same?...I'm doin a 5 speed to 6 speed conversion this week end.

20gmr Apr 13, 2010 11:50 AM

I have personally done the swap. The clutch was the same and worked perfectly. The one thing that was annoying was mitsu has a tranny harness. Its 3 plugs, one for speed sensor, one for reverse lights, and one to connect back into the main harness. The harness is diff between the 5 and 6 speed, fair enough, but did they really have to make the 3rd plug where it connects back to the main harness different??? You can just cut both plugs and wire them together But I choose to find a 5 pin connector and sauter it on to each harness. not hard to do or very time consuming its just annoying they didn't make the engine harness the same. Also You will need to swap center councils so the 6 speed can get into reverse. Its really not much harder than doing a clutch to be honest with you.

kyoo Apr 13, 2010 01:01 PM

I would love to swap my 5 speed for a 6speed.. why not just do that, get it built and lengthen the gears

Mark14 Apr 14, 2010 07:27 PM

Just did the 6 to 5 swap and clutch worked fine, just cables, shift box, and trans mount were changed.

Jhutterer Apr 15, 2010 08:52 AM

good read.. Man a long way to 50 posts..

oreoevo May 7, 2010 07:07 AM

I did the swap...works great! I still need a 6 speed center console...lmk if anyone has 1

lttldggr Aug 26, 2010 07:01 AM

I just contacted shep for a 5 to 6-speed conversion... waiting to hear... we'll see what I decide to do... whatever I do decide.. this is turning out to be an expensive endeavor... with my 2.3l conversion also... and whatever else I can figure out to do while my engine is pulled.... my wife is going to kill me!

jnebs Sep 9, 2010 03:03 PM

my 6 speed is strong and im around 400whp

Evilution23 Sep 12, 2010 03:58 PM

i just heard bad stories about the 6 speed especially for "spirited driving" Mitsubishi in essence put an extra gear into basically the same 5 speed casing. with the extra gear causes more moving parts which equals more heat. from some people i heard driving hard too long you overheat the transmission and start breaking. i mean i dont drive "spirited" all the time but i like the 5 speed for more insurance just because its strong. just my 2 cents however

The parts to go from 5 speed to 6 are over $600. including the 6 speed console. I have all the parts to do the swap, brand new.

Dont do,it,bro!!! I did it just so I could drive it while 5speed was getting built... Garbage

Def not worth the headache of changing cables shifter, mounts

oreoevo Sep 19, 2010 09:16 AM

I have a fresh never used shep 5 speed with ultimate ratio for sale:) comes with cables, mount shifter and everything needed to install in a 6 speed.car

I just bought a 6-speed and will hopefully have TRE rebuild it as I live close to them. The tranny came with the shifter cables, tranny mount and shifter mount. I'm probably going to get moderately crafty and dremel out my 5-speed center console so that the 6-speed shifter and boot will work. Unless I can find a 6 speed console for dirt cheap.

clutch bleeding

Hi all I have a 2010 lancer evolution GSR and I’m having issues trying to bleed my clutch. Can anybody help me out as what should I do? I’ve tried bleeding and still do not have a good pressure on my clutch pedal.

I would be interested IF, I had an Evo 5-speed that I was pulling out. I'm doing some wacky stuff and pulling the 5-speed f5m42 out of my Ralliart and putting in an Evo 6-speed. :spin:

Here is a decent guide from TeamRIP. I've never done it myself and don't have any tips for you. I'm sure there are plenty of YT videos too.

just keep the reservoir full to the brim, bleed some, refill, repeat. dont let the fluid level get close to the barb. some folks squish the hose to get some air out

I wonder if a power bleeder would work too. Been wanting to pick one up and I have a car that needs a clutch bleed.
