Let's see your Oil Catch can installs
A lot of people are interested in installing Oil Catch Cans. Let's make a thread with pictures showing your installation. Some people use custom cans, other uses modified ebay cans and I have seen a lot of people using modified air line filters (specially in the Subbie world) with good results.
I bought one already and have not installed, but due to size I am considering dumping it and use an air line filter, something like the husky units. I do not have a small battery kit or aftermarket intake, so space is kind of cramped. |
Here's mine a while ago with the Cusco oil catch can...

its not about price man. some of us are not cheap to find a quick fix. I rather parts stand out and give the engine some flare. Not all boring and black etc, but hey its your car as long as your happy its cool |
Good topic, I was looking for something like this a while back.
|
my crank case vent gave not a drop but the pcv is where the oil came out
will post pics 2moro |
I don't have any pictures at the moment, but I don't use catch cans. I use an in-line tractor fuel filter on the breather side (laugh all you want, but it works better than most cheap catch cans :p). On the PCV side, I use a Kobolt air/water seperator that does a pretty decent job. I use that because it's rated at 90psi, and the PCV side sees boost, I didn't want to risk one of the plastic fuel filters exloding.
The fuel filters I change about every other oil change, and route the line so it has to travel further making it harder for the oil vapor to get to the intake. They're only $3, so changing them is no big deal. The air/water seperator is $11 and you can pull it apart and pout it out when you see it filling up. So once you buy one, you really don't need to replace it, as long as you take care of it. I've had a few trial and error issues with it and have gone through 3 of them, but there is no reason you should need more than one throughout the lifetime of the car. Also, I like to use braided clear lines to watch them working. The line in starts to brown up and the line out stays clear... for some time anyway. Once the line out starts to brown up too much, you know it's time to change the filter or empty the air/water sperator. Sure, my way is ghetto, but I'm saving money, with the same benifits. Doesn't look as good either. But by the time I spend $100+ in $3 filters, well... |

Here's mine. A $3 in-line fuel filter from Autozone. VERY cheap, easy to come by, and always stays out of the way. I've been blowby free ever since I started doing this. They come in all shapes and sizes so you can always find one that will fit nicely. |

This is my custom setup with -12 an lines , as you can see we shaved down the Mivec logo on this evo 9 valvecover and it was alot of work having these fittings clear the top caps for the cams. The can is welded up to the AMS battery tray just to hold it all together. I would have post pics of it on the car but doing a full build up right now.

I have a catch can that I have not installed yet. I am thinking about dumping it for a air/water separator. How much oil are you getting on both sides? Post pictures to see your setup.
I'll go down to the garage and take some pictures later. Since it's been cold, I've been seeing a lot of water collecting in my air/water seperator on the PCV side. I was scared at first thinking I had a headgasket issue until I learned condensation and a little water in your catch can is normal. It's still real annoying to see a water and oil mix in my catch can. |
Ill post up pics of mine in a day or two once I'm finished. I'm doing something similar too 1320awd, going to take the valve cover off and drill/tap for AN fittings wherfe the stock vents are and will be deleting the PCV valve. I made a small can out of some SS tubing I had laying around and polished that all up for a little bling too. Pics comming soon

I would LOVE to run my PCV and breather to one can with a breather filter on top and not re-route back into the intake, but I thought that the system needed vaccum to work. After all the catch can and PCV discussions there still is no confirmation on this. Anytime I've tried to research on whether or not vaccum is needed else where online, I only read that it's simply recirculated to please the EPA and emmisions reasons. I rarely read anything about vaccum.
If vaccum isn't needed then how come most everybody with catch cans that don't recirc. blow the dipsticks out constantly? Again I like the idea of not recirculating at all, but I'm afriad that the blow-by will build up so much pressure and blow the dipstick out like many people have issues with. Not only that, but possible cause other, more serious issues. Anyway, here are some quick snaps of my ghetto set-up. No fancey camera work here, but it's get the point across. My engine bay isn't really worth of my fancey camera work anyway :p https://img185.imageshack.us/img185/1998/img9103ov7.jpg PCV side https://img385.imageshack.us/img385/4729/img9099ks9.jpg Breather side. Route around the battery and then recirculates in stock location. https://img385.imageshack.us/img385/3600/img9101mt7.jpg |

I read this cap works great but lets a lot of oil out, I guess you solved that by draining that oil back to the block. Thanks, Ricardo |

I went with a sealed can using the turbo inlet to draw vacuum. Will change to exhaust driven venturi and will post results.

Those of you with catch cans, what did you use to block off the PCV recirc port on the Intake manifold? Ive heard you can use a bolt and hose clamp. Im about to get a catch can for my IX
