Evo won't idle. Any suggestions?

UPDATE: 10/28/2009

Today my car did the same thing. I was driving a client around showing rental properties and my car died at a stop sign. Started right up and would not hold an idle.

My previous issued was solved 1/15/2009 when I picked up a used IAC from Aby@Milspec (thank you VERY MUCH!) and it has worked flawlessly until now...I think. The replacement IAC from Aby@Milspec came off of an 03 evo with unknown mileage. I am on the threshold of passing 100K on my evo...probably tomorrow. I Have 99,982 on it as I type this update.

I'm leaning towards the same issue as before...I am about to try someone's previous backyard fix method by lightly tapping the back of the IAC to free up the plunger...

I'm also about to try and raise the idle..but I need to research where on the TB it is..I know it is right around there...but I have no clue where..I'll find it.

Anyways...my mods are in my sig, custom tune by Shiv at Vishnu...untouched since I was tuned...years ago.

Any ADDITIONAL input would be greatly appreciated....

Oh, and I'll probably be looking for another USED or NEW IAC for an 03 Evo if anyone knows of a deal or has one for sale...PM me...

Thanks for reading!

Mike

UPDATE: 1/15/09 Today I received my used IAC from Aby@Mil.Spec and installed it in 10 minutes. Started my evo and she idles just fine. There was a noticeable difference between the broken IAC and my used replacement. I noticed the broken IAC had the shaft extended (maybe fully extended but not sure...fins were exposed) and my replacement IAC was more recessed into the shaft.

Thanks everyone for your help and suggestions...it turned out to be my IAC. I guess after 84K miles....it was time to go...

I own an 03 Evo 8 (mods in my sig). Just today on my way to my sisters house the car dies on me at a stoplight. I start her back up and hit the green light and drove off just fine. Now it dies on me as soon as I let off the gas. She won't idle without giving her some throttle. She drives fine going through the gears and just cruising.

I replaced my plugs with the NGK Iridium (7i or i7 something) gapped to .026 mm a month ago. Only thing done to the car in some time. Previously had NKG BPR 7ES gapped to .030 mm.

Tomorrow, I was planning to look for any loose vacuum lines, CEL codes, check air filter, intercooler plumbing, check the new plugs (maybe regap?) and check for tight fits on all coil packs and wires....then I was going to disconnect the battery and see if resetting the computer helps at all...

I would have searched for other threads on this topic but its not easy to do without the SEARCH feature running.

Any suggestions?

Have a tune? Any way for you to check your low fuel trims?

Same thing happened to me a year ago, $900 later I found out it was the Idle Air Controller (Iac) New from Mitsu it will be almost $400, pm some vendors on here. I got mine for $135 from a vendor and it took me10 minutes to fix. (this is after a week and a half and 3 trips to mitsubishi and a rip or two to a local performance shop) Finally, a tech at mitsu checked the IAC and said it was out of spec, but he couldn't be sure due to my big cams throwing all the factory readings off. Just my 2 cents, hopefully it helps

Hello, I had the same experience.

The chances are good that it is your ISCV (Idle speed controller valve).

My car would start, but it would not hold idle well until it warmed up.

I tuned up my car, (plugs, coils, wires) but still the same.

Basically, I had to give some gas to the car until it warmed up.

I bought a used ISCV, (it is on your throttle body) installed and performed reset with battery disconnect. Bang, good as new!

Let me know how it worked out.

I was at around 60K when my valve gave out.

My car is basically stock. Toshi

So it looks like it could either be the ISCV or the IAC?

Same thing, and yes thats what it sounds like, easy fix. Just a quick "backyard trick" to try, lightly tap on the solonoid with a SMALL hammer, sometimes that will free the plunger up. Works on Ford IAC's all the time ;) well about 80% of the time anyhow.

I had the same issue and it was the IAC

SilverShadow03 Jan 11, 2009 02:01 PM

Thanks for everyone's input...Looks like I'll get a new IAC from a vendor on EvoM.

I've been offered a USED IAC off a IX. Does anyone know if this will work on my 8? Should I stick with an IAC of the same year?

or it could be your gas filter needs to be changed

I just bought a used IAC from Aby@Mil.Spec. If that doesn't fix the problem, I'll be looking at other possibilities.

I'll post back once I install the IAC and let you all know if it fixes the problem.

BadBoy818_818 Jan 14, 2009 11:01 AM

what does IAC stand for?

SilverShadow03 Jan 14, 2009 11:09 AM

IAC = Idle Air Controller

Located under the throttle body. I just popped off the upper intercooler piping and it is right there attached by 3 screws and an electrical connector.

BadBoy818_818 Jan 14, 2009 12:11 PM

did it fix the probleme?
