car won't idle :(

I was driving along today, when I came to a stop and my engine died. Ever since, it idles at around 400 - 500 RPM and conks out after a few seconds. I do have an exhaust leak in my downpipe, but could this be a cause for my car not idling? tomorrow i'll check antifreeze and look for a vacuum line detached, but i figured i'd bring it to the pros quick.. anyone else have any ideas? {thumbup}

thank you!!

i checked the coolant level and vacuum hoses this morning, no luck, anything else i can check? :(

Recently disconnect the battery???

Do a boost leak test??

vvhiteix Jan 29, 2009 07:31 AM

your leak in your downpipe SHOULD not be the problem.. most likely a vac hose popped off from somewhere i have had it happen before.

vvhiteix Jan 29, 2009 07:32 AM

there are ALOT of hoses by the intake mani make sure you looked over them good.

is there an easy way to do a boost leak test without equipment?

thanks vvhiteix, i'll look it over better, i didn't have a flashlight at the time.

i talked to a friend of mine who is a mechanic and he's guessing the throttle body is just gunked up. he also said most vacuum leaks will make the car idle higher. i checked as many hoses as i could see, i didn't see anything that looked off.

anyone know how to do the boost leak test?

what's "ICV"?

TIBOevo Feb 2, 2009 02:08 PM

idle control valve. theres also an idle adjuster screw on the throttle body try that. no codes?

[GBU]Moon Feb 2, 2009 02:14 PM

no, no codes, i'll look for the screw on the throttle body tonight (though this sounds like masking the problem instead of fixing it), i heard it might be under a rubber cap or something.

Have u checked all the connections from the intake manifold to the fmic? It sounds like maybe a coupling is disconnected. Check the ones on the fmic, also.

i wish i had better lighting in my garage, hopefully i can use my friend's shop tonight :) i'll post my findings. thanks!

what do u have to do if u disconnected the battery.. cause i did that and mine is doing the same thing

ok, so i turned that phillips screw on the backside of the throttle body.. out about 3 turns and the idle went back up to 900 RPM. i'm sure that's just masking the problem, plus this morning when i started my car it wouldn't stay running until it was warm. at least once it's warm it stays running at stops now.

i think the problem is either..
boost leak or gunky throttle body. i'm hopefully having my throttle body cleaned this week.
