question for evo's running high flow cat
 

are you getting any bad smells for these high flow cats or is everything ok no smell never.

No smell from high flow racing cat.But still getting a cel light.

which brand are u using that giving u a cel?

Are these High-Flow Cats as effective as the stock ones in controlling emissions? In other words, if you replaced the stock cat with a High-Flow one would you still pass emissions testing?

If you get the car hot enough you might. FYI the stock car barely passes. :mitsu: had a hell of a time getting it under EPA. I still can't beleve we have only one cat.

The EPA has some crazy regulations. You would think that by running leaner, you'd have less bad stuff go out. However, the EPA has a rule where the Cat has to last 100,000 miles and running leaner (i.e. hotter) could make them go before that. Whatever happenned to a maintenance schedule where you replace parts!

That's a reason some tof the RX8 guys are claiming for their reduced power, but then again who knows if the engine ever could have put out the previously touted figures.

I thought the Evo met LEV1 standards this year... how can it barely pass then? BTW running lean is generally cleaner but it increases NO2 emissions, thus causing the cars to fail emissions testing. But across the board you would see lower pollutants in other areas, all things being equal.

News to me I don't think the EVO is LEV but I think all cars after 2000 have to meet LEV. Not sure. The WRX are ULEV because of three cats and the STI does not meet this rating because it only has two.

Ding, Ding, Ding! Winnar here. The Evo is a LEV1 vehicle, so it should pass normal (non calif) emissions easily.

Air Pollution Scale 0 (Least)-10 (Most)

EVO = 6

S2K = 6 (03)

350Z = 6

STI = N/A

RX8 = N/A


Greenhouse Gases

0-15 tons/yr.


EVO = 9.0

STI = 9.5

S2K = 8.7 (04), 8.4 (03)

350Z = 8.5

RX8 = 9.3

I don't notice a smell, but I have a CEL so I would not pass emissions in Texas right now. Ryan Fellows at RnR is working with me to get this fixed though, we might have to go to a Random or Carsound cat instead of the Catco. I have had the car two months and it is my first new car, I am NOT going to put up with a CEL and I do not want to revert to a CEL eliminator when I don't have too.

On the site, it says 10 is the best, 0 is the worst. So then the Evo is actually decent. I wonder what cars qualifies at 0??

There are some versions of the Civic Hybrid that get a 10 (California I presume?). Interestingly the regular Civic only got a rating of 7-8.

I don't think we have enough info to say that the EVO's rating of 6 is decent, even on a one to ten scale (10 being the best) until we look at where other cars are on the rating scale as well.

It the rating of 6 was one of the lowest of cars in the market, and most cars had a rating of 8 or 9, then "decent" probably isn't the word you'd be looking for.
