what's the best oil for race engine?

Hi guys ,

just I want to ask if i'm on a wrong way about using an oil on my car , over here in my country we got a hot weather over 45 degrees so I used a castrol magnatec 10w- 40 on my old set up , now I have a new set up (expecting 650 -670 whp) so what do you recommend for? stay on 10w-40 or go with 20w-40 , 20w-50 ?

You need to speak with your engine builder and depending on bearing tolerances he will recommend which viscosity oil to use.

in fact my mechanic has a good experience with VQ engine ( nissan engin ) he said that the 20w-50 is the best for this engine and about the 4g63 he told me to ask any one know about this thing

Not sure about built engines but myself and others on BITOG have had good luck with Shell Rotella t6 synthetic 5w40 but like others have said it's up to the builder and the tolerances.

I would not use magnatec in a hi performance motor. Mobil 1 15w 50 is probably the best choice from what you listed. Rotella 5w 40 would be next best.

We only use Brad penn 20w50 in all the cars we build. Works great and has yet to let us down, even in really tough conditions.

Mobil 1 has been shown to have had some less then desired characteristics as of late.

For your climate, an appropriate fully synthetic 10w-40 or 15w-50 should be your best bet for street use and road racing respectively. You should check the availability of Mobil 1 Racing 4T 10w-40, which is a motorcycle oil, but is suitable for severe duty use in auto engines, and contains a detergent package (unlike many racing oils).

Those particular characteristics apply to the lighter viscosities, not the 0w-40 or 15w-50.

So what are your thoughts on Rotella 5w40 T6 synthetic? It's what i've been running the last 3 changes and it seems to be pretty decent. At 3k miles it hadn't burned off any oil. I saved the oil in case I decide to send it out for UOA.

I prefer M1 0w-40 to Shell Rotella T6 5w-40 where readily available 40 weight oils are concerned, primarily because the Shell product's literature specifically claims it to be formulated with minimal phosphorus content. While that doesn't appear to present issues in most cases, I can't see anything about it that makes it especially desirable, not on paper anyway.

as said not 15w 50. To the op; what oil temps do you expect to see?

I am curious why so many seem to be pushing thicker weight oils in small engines with light weight internals. The EVO engines are similar in rotation mass as are formula one engines and they use a 0-30 weight and even a 0-20 weights oils. Im not an oil expert but its my understanding from my boat racing experience...( 502 ci engines making 1000 hp ) thats when you want to run a 50 weight oil for all the heavy parts. If someone knows for sure different from a real technical standpoint please speak out.
