Suggestion on this please.
Need some information of what this noise could be.
-40 mph disengage the clucth -shift from 4th to 3rd -rpm drops to about 2000 -start slippening the clucth out to help slow a bit, RPM's go back up -just when clucth starts to grab, (I'm hearing something I've never heard with any car), it's a loud harsh hum with vibration in the clucth. Sounds almost like the side of the inerstate grooves when your tire rolls over but not that extreme. -nosie can be heard when going from 3rd to 2nd also Does anyone have any suggestions of what this could be. I have the regular decel noise but I think this is totaly a different ball park here. |
I had that exact problem in my EVO. The dealer pulled the clutch out and found that the fingers on the pressure plate were weak causing the pressure plate and flywheel to form hot spots on only half of the contact area. The tech line guy looked at it and said to replace it. It was under warrenty and the clutch had no wear.

evoracerx thanks for responding quick, I have appointment for my car later on this morning for breaks and will have to get this checked out also. More responses will be appreaciated also.

Well I took the car in and the service guy tried to tell me it was the regular decel noise. He asked me to describe what the problem was and then magicaly pulling the paper out that has all the EVO noises on it. It was an insult if I'd ever seen one, thinking I don't know what type of noise I'm haveing. I know the car has decel noise, I'm telling him as he continues to point out the sheet to me. So he gets the tech guy to ride with me again, this time the tech guy drives and realizes that it isn't the same problem. Asses. :shoot: :mitsu: So now I have to wait for the area Rep. to get invovled.

Mines is doing the same thing.
Seems like at a certain engaugement point in the pedal travel, I get that same humming noise you described. Everything else seems fine though. |
Tell the dealer to contact Pete from the Mitsubishi Tech line, and ask Pete about the clutch noise from Josh's car at Whittier Mitsubishi. It is the same thing.

yeah, i've got it too. i called miller mitsu and they just said it was normal...blah! i'm an engineer, i have a firm grasp of the physics and mechanism here, it is definitly not right. i am going to try to get pete on the line. 'will advize.

I'll do that on Monday, I bet he tells me to wait for the rep. {thumbdwn}

1st and 2nd gears in evo's are nearly, but not totally, stright cut. Most transmission gears are cut helically (the gear teeth touch gradually) to reduce noise, but straight cut gears are stronger. This is why 1st gear is exceptionally whiney. Also, if you have ever been at full throttle at about 4000+ rpms in 4th, you can hear a lot of whine as well. The decel noise you are hearing, which is a lot louder than most transmissions, is the opposite of the acceleration whine, which is caused by the gear cuts. Its not a problem, its just a compromise. Strong trans instead of quiet trans.

We know this, it's a different problem.

I have this noise, and Ive noticed it ever since I put my Exedy in. My friends evo with stock clutch also makes this noise. I have it now, and it doesnt go away.
Personally, I wouldnt call it a problem, being that so many have it. I have 12000 HARD DRIVEN miles on my car, and even though it worried/annoyed me @ first, it doesnt bother me anymore. Ken |
:shoot: :mitsu: I got a call from the service manager saying they figured out what was wrong with my clucth. He said that it was glazed from slipping it and it's not covered under the warrenty. It's only covered if it's a :mitsu: problem. :rant: Bull****! Never once have I launched my car, crap they haven't even took it apart and looked at it. The car has 2400 miles on it and not one friggin dump. I asked the service guy to ask for Pete from the previous post, "Um...we talk to who ever answere's the phone." WHAT! Just ask for Pete! How hard can that be? Well the :mitsu: area Rep will be there in the morning hopefully I can keep my cool and get this crap taking care of.

If they take the tranny out to check the clutch they can very well charge you for the job if they find that its "abusive driving" caused. Ask Illrunya , he had the same thing happen to him.

i've got the noise, and that 'plate fingers' thing sounds right to me. i dis-engage the clutch, nothing...then shift lever to lower gear-then steady vibration about a second, no fluctuation in pitch or intensity, although both drivetrain and motor are changing speeds. it feels like the little bit of energy from the new, lower gear synchro is transfering just enough kinetic energy to the dis-engaged clutch disc to make it spin momentarily. obviously if there are high spots, or some other abberation on the plate or flywheel, this is just what this would feel like.
i am having much trouble finding Pete, or any service advisor that has any clue of what i'm talking about. i kinda feel like the only thing that the local tech's know about the evo specifically, is that thereb is some ambiguous early clutch failure that can be passed off on 'hard drivers'..."why else would you buy an evo?" one local sevice advisor actually said "well, surley it's not your daily get around car". WHAT!?!? help |
Ive got the noise just recently to grrr more problems....
