Radiator doesn't suck in antifreeze..

Sorry if theres already a thread about this kind of thing i looked and a lot that i find aren't what im looking for.. so i got my car back from a shop and they said after they drove it all the antifreeze pushed out the overflow.. They said it might be the cap and put on a new one. i drove home (like 30 miles) and after i let everything cool off i check and the radiator was still dry and the overflow was just about overflowing, right to the top... any ideas? help is much appreciated.

...have you changed the cap like they suggested?...only a few bucks from autozone

They put a new one on at the shop. But when I got home there still wasn't any in the radiator. The overflow was over full doesn't suck it in..

could be a blown headgasket. could be pushing compression out of radiator.

+1.

And a reputable shop would be able to test this for you with a block tester. Its a tool that plugs the radiator filler opening with a blue fluid in it. You use a small rubber suction device that pulls air from the radiator through the fluid. If it turns yellow your getting fuel fumes/exhaust in the coolant indicating a bad headgasket. Some auto parts stores sell them and you can do it yourself. Literally takes 10 - 15 minutes.

Edit: If you want to do it yourself Autozone has the tool for about 25 bucks and the fluid for about 8.

Damn that sucks. And you drove without any coolant? What kind of shop did you take your car to? They sounds like they didn't check ur car just kinda guessed then gave it back to you. Did they try to figure this out? Or did you not ask them? I'm confused why you would post here when your car was already at a shop...

I hope you get this taken care of soon before anything happens. GL dood

Well it was a "speedshop" and there were supposed ro be looking at a whistle noise that they said was my power steering pump. And do an axle seal. When I went to get it they said after they drove it the antifreeze poured out the over flow... And said they put a new cap on it. I never had it happen to me before. They thought the cap would fix it but when I looked when I got home the radiator wasn't full but the overflow was over full. Idk if I wanna drive all the way back there with it like that

EAVWIDL May 19, 2011 09:26 AM

sounds like your "speedshop" might have been doggin your car out tryin to find that whistlin noise. just my 2 cents.if it didint happen before and now it is i say its there fault

Colbyy May 19, 2011 09:40 AM

Yeah that's why I hate bringing it places.

Yeah I don't have any other signs of one tho. But I guess a compression test couldn't hurt

First, the only time coolant is pulled from the jug is when there is vacuum in the cooling system. This occurs as the engine cools, not when driven and only if the system is tight. Second, it sounds like the shop lifted the head while testing.

soundin like a real big issue now.

hope you can prove it was the shops fault.. you may need to speak with who test drove the car.

Yeah when it's cool the overflow is still way full. And idk how they lifted the head by driving it?

Read my other post and you will be able to see the status of the headgasket for like 35-40 bucks.
