World's cheapest 2.4L Build

Recently I bought a wrecked 2003 evo for 4 grand, 52k miles. It looked like an easy core support, radiator, intercooler, bumper, bend a few things back in place.. etc kind of fix. After digging into the car a little further, I found out the block is cracked. Needless to say, being a salvage title car it is going to be worth less in the end. Putting a stock 2.4 in keeps my TOTAL COST for the entire vehicle to just under $6000.

2.4 build:

Running 2.4 from friends salvage yard $400
Adjustable cam gears from ebay........... $48
MD-182292 timing belt...........................$73.90
Water Pump spacer (MAP)......................$24.99
Gallant head gasket (MAP).....................$84.99

My total comes out to just over 630 bucks. For wanting to keep the car as stock as possible (for resale purposes) I think that .4L of extra displacement will make the car a little more fun to drive on the street.. and correct me if I'm wrong, but a stock 4g64 bottom end should be good for ~350whp???

Please correct me if any of this information is wrong! Thanks!

With what turbo? stock 8 (10.5 hotside)? Or 9 turbo?

rocketguy Jun 8, 2011 08:13 AM

stock 8 turbo, going for ultimate budget 2.4

Nice, post pics once you get the project rolling!

Don't forget all the little stuff --fresh valvestem seals and maybe a valvejob to keep everything up top fresh, a set of cams and fresh valvesprings (MAP and GSC make some basic beehives that are perfect) if it's an 8, break-in fluids, fresh drivetrain fluids all around is a good idea, and since it was in a wreck, check the brakes out and at least bleed them with fresh fluid.

I actually thought about doing cams on it.. but I can always put cams in with the engine in the car later (even though it is much easier when its out). Drivetrain fluids are definitely going in. In spirit of the complete budget built, and the fact it is (was) a low mileage 2.0, i'm going to skip everything to do with the valvetrain, though.

Here is the URL to my other thread, it has a couple more pictures of the car.

with a 8, 10.5 turbo you can prob push close to 400whp with good e85 tune and supporting mods, but with stock everything prob around 350

rocketguy Jun 8, 2011 09:35 AM

350whp is really all I am shooting for since I don't want to strain the stock bottom end.. I will most likely have the ECU flashed once I make sure there isn't anything else wrong with the whole car. Thanks for the input!!

so basically a stock 2.4 not a built 2.4. mean One would wonder since the motor is out why would you not just go ahead and drop a set up better pistion rods bearings etc in there but i guess its all about getting it done and cheap as possible. Would be a thousand times easier to build it now and make the shorty hella stronger

rocketguy Jun 8, 2011 10:40 AM

RocketmanX - I agree in that it would be way easier to just build it now.. but the cheapest pistons and rods are around 930.. then you have bearings and rings and machining.... so basically we are talking an extra 1100-1500 bucks.

I don't think anyone has actually built a stock 2.4 evo on here, so I will either be the example of how to build a grenade for $600 bucks, or the example of how to replace your blown up motor for around 600 bucks :)

Not so sure about doing that on a NA 2.4 block. Sounds like a good way to shoot rods out the block.

Aby@MIL.SPEC Jun 8, 2011 10:45 AM

i forget what the 2.4 rods look like exactly, but they are a lot weaker than a evo8/9 rod.

rocketguy Jun 8, 2011 11:01 AM

I think its pretty impressive that all you see in engine shops "2.4l shortblock stage whatever" motors that they all essentially use the stock, unaltered 2.4 crank. Thanks for everyones input so far!

The stock 4g64 is good for 340~wtq in fwd app before you start seeing problems. Ive tune more stock 4g64 motors than probably anyone on here, sense I mainly tune stock motor turbo 3g's and 8g galants. Just keep the tq below 330~ and 400whp is possible reving out to 7k
