EGTs SPIKE UP! WHAT GIVES???

ALRIGHT HERE IS THE DEAL...

When I am normally driving I notice that now on my Greddy EGT gauge that the EGTs jump up approx 125c between shifts (from 800c to 925c) Even when I am at WOT the EGTS register at the highest 850c, but then jump upto 975c when I let off the gas!

I never remember seeing this before, infact I could swear that before it dropped about 200c between shifts, not jump up.

Is there something wrong with my car?? or is it a faulty sensor or gauge???

Any help or thoughts appreciated.

Stock car right? Burning fuel in the manifold

Boni Dec 30, 2003 05:59 PM

thats high readings...

No, not stock....3" DP, 3" Exhaust, and test pipe. BLITZ intake, and E-01 holding boost at 19.5psi

What do you mean by burning fuel in the manifold? How does this happen or why?

You have no fuel control does that BOV VTA?

AustinEvo8 Dec 30, 2003 06:06 PM

Yes, no fuel control and I have a GREDDY TYPE R BTA.

So it recirculates or vents to atmosphere?

Where is the thermocouple mounted?

Speedlimit.... :)

IT IS SET TO VTA.......SPeedlimit, it is in the far left runner if you are standing infront of the car.

If your running rich, sometimes the heat from the the manifold will ignite any unburnt fuel that gets spit out after the combustion process.

I doubt this is the case though, unless your hearing some backfiring sounds when you let off to shift. It does seem pretty odd that you would see increases' between shifts. Have you check your EGT probe and connections? Do the EGT's seem normal everywhere else? Sorry I couldn't be of more help, I guess the best thing is to get ideas from others that have EGT guages.

I'm curious what the readings should be. I'm getting ready to install a guage myself.

AustinEvo8 Dec 30, 2003 06:16 PM

I haven't seen anything before on this gauge above 900c, and that was running race fuel and 21.5 psi. at the track doing a total of 8 runs.

Speedlimit Dec 30, 2003 06:18 PM

That is the number 1 runner and you should see a sharp drop in EGT's as the rpm idles down from WOT. I'm not familiar with that Greddy Gauge, but is it electronic and/or can it be calibrated or nulled out?

Speedlimit...

Well there it is there is no way to control it short of a power fc or standalone. You are running mega rich between shifts dumping lotsa fuel into the manafold. Is your spark plugs sooted? How bad is your tailpipe?

Coolguy949 Dec 30, 2003 06:23 PM

If he were running VTA, his temps would go down between shifts due to the karman MAF taking that blown off air into consideration even though it's not there.
