03' Evo Won't Start After Cam Install
I followed this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ex-43BYrjP0 I triple checked everything before it was put back together, and the car won't start. Getting fuel and spark. The only thing that felt weird was that the CAS didn't feel like it wanted to slide very far into the cam.
Any ideas? |
You might have flipped the cam sensor notch 180 degrees. Doing it according to that video is not the smartest thing IMO. You dont know if timing belt comes off a tooth down at the crank sprocket. I would highly recommend you take apart the complete cover and make sure your timing belt marks are lined up correctly.
|
I will try flipping the sensor. I secured the timing belt very tight with zip ties. The belt seems to be tensioned properly. However, I will double check. I didn't go into this blind; I've built many cars before. That's why I'm a bit confused.
|
I pulled the Valve Cover off, checked if everything was at TDC (screwdriver method), and checked everything. The sensor is in correct. Nothing is wrong, and the cams/motor ARE at TDC. I bled the lifters, however, was advised to NOT pump them back up. Thus, since the lifters are soft, they will not open the valves for their proper events. Correct? Thus, that would not let the car start.... Also the car runs on AEM EMS. Since this is speed density, could the change from BC272/XSPower to S2/Nisei throw off the tune so much that the car won't even start? Those are the only two reasons I can come up with, other than the obvious timing belt jumped a tooth (which I'm almost positive it did not, as I monitored it very closely. HELP!

Some Evo guru must be able to answer this.
|
Set it on time with the v/c take pics. Or do a compression test make sure u didnt bend a valve
|
It's at TDC. Timing is on. Verified at the crank. Cams are at 0 degrees. I don't need to take pictures. I checked all that three times. I'm asking about the lifters.
|
Did you make sure all sensors etc were plugged in? Is it getting spark?
|
Getting fuel and spark. Triple checked all sensors. Turns over, just doesn't want to catch.
Edit* Sorry for not including that information. I thought I had. |
Adjustable cam gears? Make sure the cam dowel is in the evo position not dsm. This will cause a no start
|
If you have spark and the injectors are pulsing with good fuel pressure and you have good compression (150-160) and your timing is set then it should run

Option 1: I bled the lifters, however, was advised to NOT pump them back up. Thus, since the lifters are soft, they will not open the valves for their proper events. Am I correct in this thinking? Thus, that would not let the car start.... Option 2: Also, the car runs on AEM EMS. Since speed density is a bit more finicky, could the change from BC272/XSPower to S2/Nisei throw off the tune so much that the car won't even start? Everything else is verified that it's in working order. |
Imo, lifters won't cause a no start. Don't think its tune related.
Perhaps cams are mismachined Compression test |
I suppose that's what I'll have to do next. Thanks for the insight!
