Getting locked out, tranny doesn't feel smooth at all
 

Let me first say that yes this my first manual car, and yes I'm a nub. Anyway, my evo only has 10.9k miles on it, but I've had it for years. It was sitting in my garage till a month ago. I would take it out for a few minutes every once in a while just to make sure it didn't sit for too long. In those times that I took it out, I never got to really learn to drive it.

Now I'm taking it to work everyday, and starting to get the hang of it. However, the tranny just doesnt feel smooth at all. What I mean by that is that when I put it in gear it's obvious that you are placing something metal inside of another metal. Is this suppose to be the case?

Also I keep getting locked out of gears. Usually 2nd and 4th I think? Am I shifting at too low an rpm? This is just driving normal, not banging gears.

Could it be that I need new tranny fluid? Will a new moter mount do anything? New shifter bushings? Adjusting the clutch pedal?

And please hold back the comments about someone driving an evo who can't drive stick. I'm already embarresed enough.

what Rpm do you shift at?
Hows it feel when you double Clutch?

metal hitting metal feels is like grinds. You have 5spds or 6 spds?

check tranny fluid or just have the whole system flushed. if i had a car sitting for that long i would change all the fluids, as well as the fuel.

I usually try to shift around 2.5k from 1st to 2nd, and 2nd to 3rd. 3rd to 4th, and 4th to 5th I shift a little higher.

I have never tried to double shift.

It's not a grinding. It's just doesn't feel smooth. 5speed.

Trust me I didin't want to garage it, but I couldn't afford it at the time.

I should probably just flush it all.

mine does this too into second. doesn't grind, but as soon as you start going into gear you can tell the car doesn't want to go into gear without seemingly over-excessive force

Changing fluids is definitely the best course of action. So what sujinX said.

you said you're now driving it to work. Is work a far drive? i know my transmission was always a turd until it had been warmed up, then it got much better. It always had a notch in 2nd from day one, and it never got any worse.

With so little driving I would say changing as many fluids as possible is in your best interest, espeically since you now started driving it regularly. You're new to manual, so I'd say make a concise effort to push teh clutch pedal to the floor, wait half a second, then shift, and don't realease the pedal until you are fully in gear. I still catch myself pulling out of gear before fully disengaged, and releasing the clutch what feels early. no grinding though

First of, u got a rare care man, yea u werent able to drive it and it had to b garage, but if i had the money i would garage mine and dd sumthin else, so when the rest of us r rebuilding an engine becuz it went boom, ull b sittin way under a 100k, but before this thread gets outta hand, if u cant remember or just for the health of the car, spend the money and replace all drive train fluids, and even engine oil as well, u can also pick up sum under hood shifter bushings for newhere from 25-40$, there great, and also prevent high rpm lockout, and lockout period, just do urself a favor and treat the car the way it deserves, take care and good luck
