It's 9 degrees outside, how much more horsepower?
 

Greetings from Michigan.

Over the weekend, it was 9 degrees outside and no snow on the pavement. I took my Evo out for a drive on Avdans.


I noticed a significant gain in horsepower and was wondering if anyone would know how much extra horsepower would be gained by the cold weather?



Actually broke all 4 Avdans loose in second gear going in a straight line.

Geez...at last dyno I have 265whp...and I have never "broken the tires loose". I must suck:crap:

I have wrote ideas on cooling the intercooler and many negative people just flame me.

I believe temperature on the intercooler can change HP.

There is a dyno of the intercooler chiiler kit and it shows gains.

Change in hp will probably be negliable, the reason you chirped 2nd gear is more than like because of the loss of traction with the stock Advan's in cold weather.

Stock advans are NOT to be used when the temps are below 40.

You only broke loose because you were overcoming the severely limited grip that was available at such low temps.

I agree - it was loss of traction on tires you should NOT be running.

I think it was the tires plus the colder temps, yesterday it was a little below 25 and all of mine where very slippery until they warmed up.

Turbocharged cars run differently in colder weather.

Should not be making that much more peak hp. However, the knock threshold will be reduced greatly because of the cold, charge air. It will however, induce boost at light and half throttle a whole lot quicker! The turbo will come on a lot sooner. Should feel like running on empty. =)

I have to turn my EBC down a whole lot when temp drops. I can overboost very quickly.

people have been posting, their car has been boosting more in the cold weather...

I agree that the Avadans are hard as rocks when cold.

The butt-dyno definately said power increase, but may be that the boost is coming on quicker.

Seems like I had read that air was denser at colder temperatures.

More air = more fuel = more power, simple as that.

Same reason why your car wheezes in the summer time when you try to do that 3rd gear on-ramp merge at 7000rpm. :D

What the hell are you saying of course there will be gains in HP. The colder the air, the denser the air is, so in 1 cubic foot there will be more molecules of oxygen. Combined this with the fact that the intercooler will be more effective and you will see a marked improvement in performance (ecu compensates for the increase in air by pumping more fuel in). I think it is a 10 degrees C drop gives around a 1 – 1.5 bhp gain. This is why you can see a 30 bhp gain on a N2O Evo just from the cooling effect!
