Need a timing belt, and on a budget? Here's how!

NOTE: This is not a how-to, there are plenty of those threads on here. This is simply giving you another option to the oem parts without compromising quality. The water pump is only for the Evo 8. Also, please don't come in here and start bashing. These are all well trusted brands that most likely make all the oem parts you paid 2-3 times the money for. This is informative.

So like many of you out there, I am not made of money. So owning a car like this takes a lot of time, hard work, and money. Since I was installing new cams into my car I decided to see what I could do to replace everything that is involved with the timing belt on a budget. After many hours browsing the internet for parts and part numbers I came up with a list. Most of the parts are Gates brand with one OEM, and one GMB. As we all know Gates is a very well trusted brand so I was not worried about ordering their belts. They also make pulleys, water pumps, and tensioners! Everything you need to get going. I decided to go with GMB water pump because A) it was cheaper and B) it's still quality. Hell it's made in Japan, and so is our cars. The one OEM part I could not find a Gates replacement was the timing tensioner pulley. They do make it because you can pick it up in a kit at your local auto parts store. Problem with that is the belts are some dayco brand so I went ahead and pieced it all myself. Being that's a $45 part I decided to not worry too much. So here goes the list:

Gates Timing Belt - T167 - $30
Gates Balance Belt - T168 - $15
Gates Balance Pulley - T41038 - $21
Gates Idler Pulley - T42017 - $20
Gates Timing Belt Tensioner - T43130 - $86
OEM Timing Tensioner Pulley - MD369999 - $45
GMB Evo 8 Water Pump - $45 (no part number, works on many :mitsu: engines)

Total: $262.00

I did the work myself, so I saved quite a bit of money. Now just for good measure I'll include the Gates water pump part number.

Gates Water Pump - 42577 - $50-80

I was wondering how the quality of the Gates water pump compared to the OEM one. Will it last as long?

wazmunstr Jul 18, 2012 08:45 PM

I'm sure it will. Gates water pumps having been used in other engines as well as the 4g63's for decades with no problems. It's a direct oem replacement. Gates makes oem parts for many car companies, without you ever knowing it.

Just about any local parts store can get them, or if you want online ordering, check out www.RockAuto.com

I just found a beat price OEM parts price from our vendor lol. Hummm maybe i just go with gate, thats alot cheaper. Question, evo 9 and evo 8 water pump is same?

Chef-j Jul 19, 2012 12:52 PM

Looks like evo 9 needs 9 water pump. For evo 9, strictly modified has best price for OEM parts with water pump.

If you price these parts out on Amazon you can save even more money. Great work compiling this list. Kudos.
