last inch of rear axle does'nt go into the diff

last inch of rear axle does'nt go into the diff. everything is aligned and the diff is back on, but the axle just does'nt wanna snap in the last inch.... any tips/tricks ? I tried whacking the dust shield but the sheild slides off fairly easy...
