Evo Gear Ratio's Convertion for Hill Climb Run
Hi Guys,
just wonder is there any shorter gear ratio in the market to replace the oem 5 gears manual transmission for hill climb run? Which gear usually is best to convert 4th & 5th? Thanks |
Anyone to share...
Thanks |
Do you have euro spec or jp spec? The JP spec has shorter gearing.

Look into the Japanese RS gearbox and also couple it with the evo4-6RS final of 4.875

jdm rs ratios are the answer

Yeah. Like Yogi says. JDM RS 5-spd. gearbox has closer spacing between gears so that upshifting or down shifting only cause a 300 RPM drop, or jump respectively. I think that on the JDM RS 5-spd boxes 5th gear is not overdriven and is thus, 1:1. This is the way it should be in a competition 5-spd. anyway. Compute top speed for the particular course at redline in 5th and then just swap the ring and pinion gears to suit top speed limit at each particular track.
The final drive ratio can be determined by knowing the top speed that will be reached on the longest straightway of the particular course and engine redline at that top roadspeed. You'll want the engine to redline in 5th at very near the highest roadspeed that you expect to see on the longest straightaway right when you lift off for braking. Apparently, there are three versions of JDM RS 5 boxes: Long, medium, & short. I think that the only difference between the three is the final gear ratio. You can get more info by searching over on Lancer Register though. |
Yeah. Like Yogi says....The JDM RS 5-spd., close-ratio gearbox has tighter gear spacing, so that upshifting or down shifting only causes a 300 RPM drop, or jump respectively. This is ideal for keepng revs within a race engine's narrow powerband and rev matching for downshifts, etc.
I think 5th is 1:1(not an overdriven reduction as with the USDM 5-spd.)The final drive ratio is best chosen by knowing the highest speed that will be reached on the longest straightway of the particular course and picking the final drive ratio that will give you that speed at redline in 5th which is 1:1. With this close-ratio gearing, and the 1:1 final drive ratio, 4th gear is usually about 1.17:1. Apparently, there are three versions of JDM RS 5 boxes: Long, medium, & short. I think that the only difference between the three versions is the final gear ratio. You can get more info by searching over on Lancer Register though as the Brits actually use this box for hill climbing competition. |
Thank you so much Guys...
Yes, mine is a JDM 5 speed gbox 4.875 final drive |
5/6 GSR ratios
1st - 2.785 2nd - 1.95 3rd- 1.407 4th- 1.031 5th- 0.761 5/6 RS ratios 1st - 2.785 2nd - 1.95 3rd - 1.444 4th - 1.096 5th - 0.825 Gearbox Codes w5m51-2-z6a or z6a1 had the RS gearing and 4.875 fd w5m51-2-x6a2 or x6a3 / x6a7 had RS gearing and 4.529 fd w5m51-2-x6a and x6a1 had GSR gearing and 4.529 fd |
Or you could just adjust you final to the 4.9 and keep the stock box
|
Thanks but is there any shop which sell just the close ratio for 4th & 5th gears?
Hi Joseph, how should i go abt the 4.9 final and keep the stock box? Thanks |
just upgrade the final drive to a bigger one, it should make the gears close

Wait... what transmission do you have? for which model car?
http://www.lancershop.com/customer/p...cat=114&page=1 this is for the 7/8/9 5 spd which i think i may have poorly assumed was your application. however if they make it for mine then someone somewhere has made it for yours... especially the 4/5/6/ transmission which i am think is the one you run... and probably even higher if they came with 4.8+ ratios from the factory. |
