Broke Rear Diff on Evo5GSR can Lancer GSR Cm5a rear diff work?
I have a 98 evolution V GSR model with ayc. Rear diff is damaged and a used e5 diff costs $2500 in my country. I have a rear diff LSD from a 97 Lancer GSR 1800cc CM5a model readily available to me for free. Can this work? Also the previous owner has changed the final drive in my GSR gear box to the RS final drive 4.529 to 4.875.
GSR CM5A gear ratio MPH 1st gear ratio 3.583 2nd gear ratio 2.105 3rd gear ratio 1.407 4th fear ratio 1.031 5th gear ratio 0.761 Rear gear ratio 3.416 MPH154@7000 160@7500 Top gear ratio 0.76 Final drive ratio 4.11 Evo 5 GSR gear ratios Standard 1st 2.785 2nd 1.950 3rd 1.407 4th 1.031 5th 0.761 rear diff: 3.307 not sure but found this online Final Drive: 4.529 My car has approximately 380-400whp and I do drag race it and launch it very hard |
If I remember correctly, in order order to use the cm5a rear diff you will need the matching transfer box for the front
|
I have a Lancer GSR transfer box as well from my old car. But doesn't seem like I need to use it. Called the dealer told them the chassis no of my evo 5 and they gave me a rear diff ratio of 3.312 and gave the guy the chassis number of my Lancer GSR and he gave me the rear diff ratio from their Mitsubishi Software: 3.312. SO seems like it will be perfect after all having the same rear diff ratio wudnt need to change the transfer box. GSR transfer box is 50/50 evo5 is 40/60.
But now what else wud I need maybe longer axles |
seems like the Lancer GSR rear diff is identical to the evo 4/5/6 RS rear diff. It looks the same to me.
Which means people are over paying for EVO RS diffs when they can just get a lancer GSR diff for way cheaper. I used to launch my Lancer GSR 1.8t at 7500RPM at drag events and it never ever blew up..you can say its not as powerful like the evo but I had a evo 8 turbo and tubular manifold on mine. |
Rear Diff Ratios So happens the donor car was a auto gsr so its perfect for my furture evo owners who want to do this diff swap heres the info

I have in my evo 5 a evo9 rear Diff and no issues at all... works perfect!!!
|
Put it in. You'll find out real quick when you can or can't roll the car out of the garage...
|
All evos are 50/50 split.
The CM5A rear diff casing is the same as an evo1-3 and evo4 RS as they have the side brackets cast into the casing. The rear diff bracket (moustache bar) is the same as evo4-9 RS, but like above the bracket for the side mounts is different. So as long as you run the correct brackets it will bolt up. You may have issues with the propshaft length and driveshaft lengths. But if you have the parts through it up and see. Oh, and the CM5A rear diff usually comes as an open diff or at best an helical diff. |
ive picked up the mustache bar and the CM5a axles today. Will try to assemble later on.

SO Finally completed everything on Friday. AND it WORKED :)
SO list of parts for my fellow evo 4,5,6 owners who want to swap in a GSR lsd rear diff here is exactly what you need to make it work: GSR CM5A rear diff Mustache Bar GSR rear axles GSR rear CV joints(evo cv joints cant work on GSR axles) Car works perfectly fine. Difference noted when driving is my car feels a lil more under steer than with the ayc diff going into deep corners, but then comes the sudden power over steer when you keep your foot down on the gas coming out of corners :) will post pics soon |
Did you look into the diff to see if it was open or not?
|
well from turning the drives when it was on the ground it seems like a helical lsd to me.
