Worth the upgrade to 71HTA CHRA from stock 9 turbo??

Hey everyone.. so i've been looking into getting a turbo upgrade and ive looked into the FP Red, green or even the CBRD BBK-B however those are really pricey would require fuel system upgrades i would think. So i was looking into the 71HTA CHRA because it seems like an awesome bang for the buck. Question is, is it worth the upgrade from the stock 9 turbo? My car seems to perform really well on the stock turbo. Ive done 11.5@118.7 on this stock turbo and ive surprised so many people when i tell them that im still stock turbo haha.

Anyways, here's my current mod list:

Stock block and cams (96k miles)
Stock turbo
ARP head studs
Walbro 255
FIC 1120cc
Buschur 3.5" FMIC w/ IC piping
GS 3 port EBCS
Intake, TBE, o2 dump
E85 (413whp/425wtq)

Probably forgetting a few things but thats most of it.

I was planning on running stock cams as well. Would my fuel system set up work for this turbo? I see the injectors being fine but possibly maxing out the stock wally 255.

Thanks everyone!! {thumbup}

can't go wrong with the 71hta, definitely an improvement over the stock 9 turbo. Best bang for your buck in my opinion.

Thanks for the input.

I figure might as well upgrade. Already did a mid 11 pass on stock 9 turbo which was my goal lol.

I know this might be a bad question, but what whp numbers should i expect out of this turbo on stock block/cams? i was hoping for around 460-470ish and keeping my torque where it is now (425 ft/lbs)

Hard to say without trying it, I would think you should gain 40whp with just the turbo change. Why not drop in a set of cams though? I have a bnib set of Tomei 270 Type R's for Mivec if interested ;)

What would you want for them? and the tomei 270 are mild enough that i can keep stock valve train right? I wouldnt plan on running it past 7.5k rpm either

The Tomei 270 Type R's are designed to keep the stock valve train. $400 shipped, they are brand new in box :)

Does anyone know if this 71HTA CHRA with the stock appearing compressor housing flows the same 51 lbs/min that the 71HTA w/ the anti surge cover flows?

Yes, definitely worth the upgrade {thumbup}

How do the Tomei 270 type r's differ from the 270 procam? What's the lift and duration on the type r?

Nvm just found some info on it. So they're a 270 duration with a 10.70 lift on the intake and a 10.20 lift on the exhaust. Sounds comparable to a S1.

I went from 383whp on the stock turbo to 450whp on the 71HTA :D And I ran out of injector. Gonna go back with some bigger ones and see what we can make.

So is this a do it yourself project or do you send your evo 9 turbo to FP? Any machining involved or does this just swap over?

It's a do it yourself project. From start to finish it took me about 4 hours. No machining required. Just take off your intake and exhaust manifold, remove the oil and coolant lines, unscrew the CHRA clamp, remove stock CHRA, swap the WGA over, bolt the 71hta in, connect the oil and coolant lines, and bolt the manifold and intake back up and you're good to go.

Thanks for the response. It doesn't need to be balanced or anything like that? Fitment was good? Any snags your run into or any tricks/special tools needed?

The CHRA id already balanced. Fitment was perfect as FP makes their CHRA fit into a OEM compressor cover. No special tools needed.
