It's looking like I blew a coilpack... should I just get OEM ones?
 

Hey guys,

A few days ago, I was driving around in my Evo. In the morning, it drove great. My friend and I stopped home to work on my VW (because, of course, they're always broken haha) and we went back out in the Evo later. Did about 50 miles worth of driving and found that it was occasionally sputtering, much more so when under boost.

We stopped for a little photoshoot of the car and after about 15 minutes of idling, the car stalled out. I ran over, started it up, and it sounded really rough and wanted to stall out. I pulled the car off the bridge it was on and popped the hood and it smelt like gasoline.

We drove the car home and stopped at one traffic light and it began to smell like something electrical burning. Freaking out at this point, we shut the car off for some more time before limping it home at about 20mph (probably shouldn't have... but yeah)

We got home, I popped the cover for the coil packs and found that the one on the driver side looks slightly melted and has a crack. Assuming, and REALLY hoping, that this is just a case where I need a new coil pack, should I be going for an OEM one? Is there an aftermarket one that's better for around the same price? I saw the ones made by Spooln Up. Either way, I'm guessing I should get an OEM one until I'm sure that there isn't something going on that'll cause it to blow a coilpack again anytime soon.

The car has quite a few mods. It has an HKS DLI, GT35r turbo, and some other goodies. I can post more of what it has done to it if it'd be more helpful to know.

Did the gasoline smell come from the engine bay or from the exhaust? The fact that u smelled un-burnt fuel is an indication that a cylinder is not firing which sounds like a coil gone bad. I would also check the spark plug for that cylinder. Had an issue with a broken plug that caused a similar melting of sections of the coil.

The gasoline smell came from the engine bay as soon as I opened it.

I'll definitely check out the spark plug too to make sure it's doing okay. Thank you for your info!
