Gsc beehive stock retainers don't fit

So I bought some gsc beehives to go with my stock stuff for my s2 cams.
I got the stock retainers off only to find they don't fit into the top of the springs. I've never installed springs before so I wanted to check to make sure this wasn't correct. Pics:

If I turned spring over it fits perfectly

The part number on the box is gsc5039... What do?

The small side goes up.

Maybe you need there retainers.

Maybe theyre mis psckaged

Nevermind just searched that part #. Says stock retainers.

Right, I meant to measure the ID of the small side and the retainer to have someone check.

These retainers are from an Evo 4 engine, but I thought they were all the same.
Debating on just buying the springs and retainers, and sell these.

Last time i checked all 4g63 springs are interchangeable. Just like most head studs.

I checked mine as I have new GSC springs and their retainers..

the OE evo 8/9 retainer is 14.5 mm dia, on the part that goes inside the spring... GSC one is the same but is a bit shorter, for more clearence with high lift cams. Stock e8/9 retainers fir the GSC beehives without problem.. (at least beehive set I have)

Hmm, I will measure them this evening when I get home.
Do you know what part number the springs you have??
Mine are somewhat close to fitting, but obviously the ID of the spring is smaller than the retainer.

They look like factory retainers too, I feel I should point out. I don't think this engine had ever been cracked open before, cams were stock, lash adjusters were not the 3mm ones even. That is primarily why I felt maybe the Evo 4 and Evo 8 did not share retainers.

I find it strange that an Evo 8 would have smaller diameter retainers than an older model though... Just thinking out loud here.

Again I will measure them when I get home.
Thank you Kiki for taking those measurements for me!

I have to add that my OE springs were also beehives..

kikiturbo Oct 21, 2016 08:45 AM

we have really similar engine setups.. hahah

I also had the fp71 ready, but sold it and went for efr 7163... with the money from the turbo sale I bought a AMS F1 intake... LOL

Evo 8/9's had beehive springs from the factory, the older cars did not. So the retainers are not interchangeable. You need to get retainers, so you might as well buy Ti ones from GSC. The stock aluminum retainers are known to crack/break when used with stiffer springs.

cerevo Oct 21, 2016 09:15 AM

Shoot. The things you learn after the fact. I never would have guessed they were different.
Well at least I can sell these on here and take a little loss.

I'm with you Sean, I'm just going to buy the set and call it a day on that. I think the set like Kiki has are a bit stiffer anyway.

Thanks for the info guys!
