Borla Headers are POS's

Well I thought I would share my experience with the Borla Headers I purchased from vivid... The headers are obviously not a simple bolt on as they first were very difficult to bolt on because they make almost no provisions for any of the nuts... You basically have to give it the magic touch to get it on. I then noticed the manifold is not bolting to the turbo flange completely. It is angled up in the rear causing a large exhaust leak. I tried to remove the turbo mount to the block and tried to angle the turbo to cover this leak/seal correctly but it wouldn't I checked the torque on all bolts/studs as well which they were all tight. It simply is that the manifold was built slightly off. Well since I had already ran the car for about 2 day's before I discovered it (it got progressively worse with time as you couldn't see it at first) it had successfully already warped the flange to the manifold and turbo. So, I've been running it that way for some time now because I am waiting on a new turbo kit to just remove the POS. I fear that if I put the stock manifold back on it still won’t seal right because the turbo flange is probably warped. I just thought I would post my experience and give you all fair warning on what might happen if you buy a Borla header.

Oh, btw the coating it had has now started to crack/peal off so not only does it leak now but it also looks like major crap.

Man that really sucks, I'm very sorry. What does Borla have to say for themselves?

bishiboy Aug 3, 2004 04:19 PM

I saw the pictures of it installed, it looked like it cocked the turbo out toward the Rad. Is this what you are saying?

It basically does not sit flat with the turbo flange in the rear facing the block as though they welded the flange on at the wrong angle.

Mine fit perfect, and I do not have any peeling. But I am using a different turbo with the header. No problems yet, you probably got a screwed up header from the start. Should have sent that thing back.

Maybe you had a bad one?? did you call vivid and tell them? My friend has one and it fits perfect. However, the coating does peal off.

Yea, I'll be trying to call vivid tomorrow to see what they can do.

Thus far I haven't seen good fitment with Borla products. Bimmer exhausts to Evo exhaust to this header to other misc. items from friends... kinda deters me from their products.

The chances of your turbine housing flange warping is highly unlikely. There is so much more material on it compared to the manifold side. Most likely, it's your manifold flange. I'd swap the stocker back on so you don't have to drive around w/ exhaust leaks. That stuff is no good for your health.

Sounds like you should have gotten the DNP.

The turbo flange most likely did not warp. You can send the header back to Borla so they can inspect it and possibly repair it. I would suggest throwing the stock manifold back on until you get your turbo kit.

I would be asking Borla to replace the turbo and other related components that is messed up...from a company like Borla I wouldn't have expected this!

Hello,

This is David Borla from Borla exhaust. I'm sorry you have had a bad experience with our product and I assure you that we stand behind what we build by offering a true million mile warranty against manufacturing defects. We have been selling exhaust components with a million mile warranty for 27 years so we have some experience dealing with customer service and I am confident we can resolve this issue in a manner that will satisfy you.

Regarding the EVO VIII header. I direct you to this thread

https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/sh...ighlight=borla

Obviously, some of you are very happy with this header and this thread specifically mentions the ease of fitment. I need to find out what happened with yours as the installation problems you have been experiencing are an anomoly.

However, we did have some issues with the coating on our first run of headers and if you are experiencing problems with the ceramic coating you may have one of the first 10 or so headers we built. We have since gone to a much higher temperature coating and the issue has been resolved.

Please contact me directly at davidb@borla.com to resolve this issue.

Thanks,

db
