MR 6-speed shifter slop

6 speed way better than 5. my '03 does have some grinding issues into 5th if i am not careful and precise. 6 is waaayyy smoother. smooth smooth. i have the opportunity to drive both under same conditions. have to double clutch 5spd to get into reverse half the time (typical dsm tranny). haven't put in bushings though.
I drove an MR yesterday and I noticed the 'slop' in the shifter, it's more of a vagueness. True that the shifter slides into the gate smoothly because of the teflon cables, however shifting doesn't seem to be as postive or direct as the 5-speed, especially with the kartboy shifter.

VERY SMOOTH WITH NO GRINDS. I WOULD ONLY BELIEVE THAT INSTALLING THE BUSHING KIT OFFERED BY LANCER SHOP OR OTHER VENDORS WOULD MAKE THE ALREADY PRECISE SHIFTING EVEN BETTER THAN WHAT IT IS. UNDER THE HOOD IT SEEMS LIKE THERE IS A PLACE TO INSTALL A BRASS BUSHING OR KARTBOY BUSHING. PLUS YOU ALSO HAVE THE INTERIOR CONSOLE BUSHINGS THAT YOU CAN ADD. SO TO MAKE A LONG STORY SHORT I DO NOT AGREE WITH YOUR STATEMENT ABOUT MR 6 SPEED SHIFTER SLOP.

It demonstrates exactly what I'm talking about - when the shifter goes into any gear, you can rock the shifter quite a bit in any direction. Argue all you want. I don't care either way. Just showing people what I saw. I suppose you can try and convince everyone I photoshopped the video.

I was not yelling, and I did watch the video. My friend has a 2004 RS and after seeing your video he came over and we tested the play in his stock shifter. HYM guess what the play is the same as in your video and this is on a 2004 RS with stock shifter. I think that most shifters move a little but while in gear there is no slop in either (my friends RS and my MR) unless you are trying to rock the shifter back and fourth hard. I also tested for the fun of it My brothers Acura TSX and My girlfriends mazda 3. They both also had play neither one of them has any upgraded shifter. I think the whole thing is just normal. Nothing is gonna shift like a bolt action rifle. Sorry if I seemed like I was getting upset but I don't agree with the fact that the MR shifting is in any way sloppy. Thats just my opinion please do not take offense, and when you get a chance drive an MR to see what its really like. Also please go and test a stock Evo shifter it moves quite a bit too.

Hey Joe ,
I just went outside and tested my shifter again just to verify that I was not being to harsh on your judgement of the shifting . Well guess what my shifter does not even move any where near as much as the one in the video. I don't know my car has only 120 miles on it with no abuse. The shifter is very tight on mine as well as my friends RS. In your video the shifter moves much more than my friends RS and my MR. So my conclusion is maybe it has been beaten on a little
or maybe alot of people have been sitting in it testing the gears out
. I don't know but if you are any where near south florida your welcome to test mine out .Derek

Thats the only thing I don't like about the 6speed box.
As I love the feel of the 5speed, firm and very mechanical feeling, and I can tell where i'm putting it.
But the 6speed just feels mushy, atleast the gearing is nice.

ChrisW,
I just wanna say I agree with you.
I think its dependant on the particular EVO.

Sad to say but i must agree... the 6 speed is sloppy.... i compared it with my 03 5sp, an 05 GSR and an 05 RS that was in the dealership.... all the 5speeds felt nice and stiff while the MR felt soft and sloppy.... im hating myself for saying this bc i am buying an MR.. just waiting for my color... I hope its just isolated cases lke the clutch problems and 5th gear grind

That's exactly the way I feel about the 5-speed vs the 6-speed. I drove the MR and noticed it right away.
After the first 1k miles I agree, the MR 6sp has room for improvement; I've mis-shifted twice already (catching 3 instead of 5th), and at times have a hard time getting into 2nd on the downshifts, especially when then tranny is still cold. I recall my celica's 6sp having the same problems, all of which went away by use of a short throw shifter, bushings (both in car and under hood), and use of Redline MT90 transmission oil. Does anybody know if
1) aftermarket under hood / in car bushings for the 5sp will fit the 6sp?
2) anybody offers a short-trhow shifter for the 6sp yet?
Thanks.
