Wonder how "watered down" US spec Evo 8 is gonna be..

Looks like a bunch of sites are confirming the Jspec Evo 8 with 280 hp, brembos, recarros and AYC/ACD...Wonder if the US spec is gonna be able to even sniff that??

With the MSRP not to exceed $32,000 there is a fair chance we might see the full monte!

Just remember that monitors this site so maybe if we complain enough about not getting the goodies like the ACD/AYC and 6 speed that in the end they may listen to our wishes and deliver what we want (or at least the option).

I'd really like to see the 6 speed. The extra gear will do a lot for better mileage and less wear.

I'd also be disappointed if the hp. were south of 270. Yes, yes, I know how you can chip it. But the lower hp to J-spec makes me wonder why? Stricter emmisions? Sure but what if had to put a smaller intercooler on to meet the front bumer tests?

I'd certainly would like to get all the goodies. I, for one, would be willing to pay extra for them. Though, at $32000 it had better be something to behold. The G35 gets might attractive in the price range, especially if the evo is neuttered.

Everyone will be happy with it. The VIII is being brought with as much as possible...the only thing that is a factor is warranty (duty cycle in the US), in other words reliabilty. They aren't going to bring ayc OR the 6-speed until they KNOW they will survive in the US. Keep in mind the Wrx has NO tranny issues in Japan BUT that same tranny is a terrible failure here in the US. We are harder on cars (drive them different and alot more than the the Japanese). You just have to live with it..do you want an Evo that will be broken and in the shop all the time or a reliable Evo that may lack a few features that help it maintain it's U.S. reliabilty? A drop in hp is for emissions (easy fix with a chip), other parts require US DOT approval, and a lack of other things like ayc are for reliabilty.
Rest easy everyone, we are getting a great Evo...the Evo VIII is more aerodynamic, has bigger opening for the intercooler, and other slight improvements..including more welds for increased rigidity, etc. You'll see

I don't believe that reliability is the issue. In the UK you can get an Evo VII with a 3 year warranty. If you take a look at the MLR you'll know that those guys are pretty dang hard on their cars with all of their trackdays and what not. Mitsubishi knows this too.

What I do believe though is that the goodies that we all want won't be included because Mitsu USA wants to keep the price below $30K as they stated in their press release in Jan 2002. I wish they would realize that it's more important to keep the Evo as close to JDM spec than it is to meet their price goal of under $30K.

About that 6 speed... I've heard alot about it not being quite as reliable as the bullet-proof 5 spds that Mitsu has brought us in the past. And that's overseas.

In my opinion, I don't want to see a 6 unless Mitsu is 100% about it. Seems like it's a trend to slap on a crappy 6 speed just to say you have one (Hyundai Tiburon, I'm looking in your direction)...`

I really wouldn't mind a 6 speed tranny, 280 hp and AYC/ACD for 30k...hell it looks like the Jspec will be full blown and around $28k USD.

What I've heard about the Tib's tranny is that it leaves alot to be desired.

Are you sure it's the same as the Nissan one? I mean, I know that Hyundai and Kia are the same, but...

It is reported as such in the latest SCC which compares sub 20K sport cars. One of the common complaints about many of the cars was the lack of a LSD. The article goes on to give the part number for the Nissan's LSD so Hyundai Tib people can order it and put it in their cars.

Maybe the U.S. market will grow to be Mitsubishis number one audience for the EVO a few years down the line and we won't have to worry about what we don't get. Perhaps our version of the car will one day be the best. I'd like to see more displacement, around 2.4L, and a little more attention payed to interior styling. Nothing that would get in the way of the car's handling dynamics of course, just a little more to set apart from a typical Lancer. I would be interested in seeing what MMMA's Cali studio artists could do if they were given a clean sheet of paper for the car's inside. The rest of the world can have the 2.0L to meet homoglation regulations.

Yeah, right. And WRC will replace NASCAR as America's favorite auto racing pastime

How watered down you ask..Well it seems like its going to be worlds apart....not because of ayc, or acd....but to pass emissions test and bumper standards, that means that they're probably putting in large catalytic converters, different internals and smaller intercoolers. So i dont know if youll be able to raise your boost level to 18 pounds safely like you can do with the 7.
