How do I break off open end lug nuts
How do I break off open end lug nuts
I got open end gorilla lug nuts and 3 out of 20 are stripped. Don't know how to get them off. I stuck a 9mm socket in there and hammered it and tried to turn it but came right out. Any suggestions? I am in the middle of my tein s tech spring install and got the front 2 in and looks great. Havent took it for a test drive. Trying to complete it first so any ideas on this issue would be great.
Try a bolt extractor i think they are called tap sets but dont quote me on that. This will only work if you can drill a hole in your lug nuts but i doubt anything is open for you to go and get something to help u out.
Sears has this cool damaged nut remover kit. It looks similar to a tap and die set but the center of the die looks something like riffling of a gun... Works great, hopefully they have something big enough for the 19mm lugnut... good luck...
am I correct in assuming the nut is not stripped but that the head of the nut is disfigured?
vice grips
if it is frozen/stripped
as a last resort, split the nut by cutting it with a dremel and chisel. very difficult to do without marring the wheel and stud!

these are the lugs where the key fits INSIDE the socket not around the outside which makes it kinda tough to put a socket on the outside of it since its like 1mm away from the rim(exaggerating, but its really close). Here's 2 pics i took

might have to weld a bit in there to get a grip
but as a first option I'd try JB weld.
grease the end of the lug stud, trying not to grease the inside of the nut, clean the nut socket very well, jb weld in a socket bit, let it set over night and then give it some torque without impact.
welding might be your only option if that will not work. the heat directed on the nut will help big time.
you might try a heat gun and beating in another slightly bigger socket wrench. heat will help!

heating it with what and on where exactly? Directly on the lug or on the stud? Still couldnt get it off so did my s tech install without taking the rear wheels off. Wasnt too hard with the wheels on but now my new lugs are coming in and i need to get these POS off. Spent an hour tryna get that bastard off. Couldnt do much except strip the inside even more.
try a small propane torch, like the cans you get to fire up the little porpane stoves. They have torch nozels too. Since you can hardly see anything but a bit of the nut that is what you want to roast. Avoid heating the wheel as best you can. Guessing around fifteen seconds under fire should do it. If you can't get a bite you could try the jb weld but for the time involved might as well go direct to below.
If you can't get any purchase in the nut give it up, drive it over to a welder who knows what he is doing. he can weld on a nut or a shank, whatever makes the most sense.

trouble is the guts of the nut are gone, he has stripped it to the point an allen key or hex key on a wrench won't grab anything.( for the life of me I can't think of the right terminology
and I have gone out and bought them too.)

yup no allen key or what not is gonna work its basically a a circle inside there. So i just heat up the lug for a bit and hit it with a chisel or something of that type and it should crack off? I ordered new lugs, i just need these bastards to get off. 2 on the left rear and 1 on the right rear. I do have a propane torch.
