Anyone else use the STi to get the Evo price down?
I want to buy an Evo over STi. I've been a DSM guy ever since I could drive and have always prefered the Evo over the STi. Anyway, I have been talking to some dealerships here and there always telling them I am looking into STis also, and I will buy which ever is the better deal and which ever dealership is going to give me a better price... yadda yadda yadda.
I think if the sales person believes, not only will one walk out but then go buy the compeition vehicle, they may be willing to deal more... yes?
And I am not 'afraid' to walk out either...

What the crap, why are all the STis here so freakin expensive...cheapest I've seen is 34k...but yeah, better deal then you get into it, and then the mitsu dealers should say that a 40k evo is a better deal than a 34k sti
I bought my Evo for 27.5 two years ago. That was when the dealers were placing 3 to 5 thousand markups on the Evos.
This is how I did it. I took two friends with me to the dealership in another town (I used to live there and was visiting), and the entire time I acted undecided on the Evo, and my friends kept telling me to test drive the STi before buying the Evo. The dealership knew I had not driven the STi, and was going home that night. I told the dealership that I was either taking my RSX, the Evo, or the STi home that night.
During the entire time my friends kept telling me not to make mistake and buy the Evo before driving the STi. They also told me to take a few days to think about it.
They were not annoying, they just tried to look like concerned friends that did not want to see a buddy make a mistake.
Also, since I was acting undecided, I made it look like I was going to walk out during the finance part, and got them to below 5% finance.
It worked very well, my friends and I should have gotten Oscars for that day.

That is a nice way to look at it, but I have lived in three cities in the last 4 years, so dealer loyalty is not one of my strong suits. Plus, Having bought 5 new cars in the last 4 years, I try to get the best deal possible, make every dollar count.
To the driver who posted this thread. You have two cars to choose from. Both the STi and Evo are a great cars. I will say go for the Evo, I own one. When buying a car, there is nothing wrong with putting cars against cars, dealers against dealers, what ever it takes. This is what makes the deference in buying a car for the price they want or you want. Good Luck.

You can use the STi vs Evo angle AND the dealer vs dealer angle. That's what I did. Basically, every time dealer A gave me a bottom line price, I would relay this to dealer B. B would naturally knock off a couple of hundred off. This continued until I got the price I wanted. The sales guys hated me, but I paid 1300 below invoice on mine so I didnt care.
in hawaii we have a huge dealer mark-up. they wanted 32k for an RS. i told them that i want it for msrp out the door. they said that they couldnt let an evo go for so little. so i thanked him for his time and started to walk away. till he stoped me and said lets talk. i ended up paying 26K out the door.
in hawaii, sti's are 31590, w/o discount. there are 5 subie dealers, and one mitsu dealer, i got mine from cali after my dealer stiffed me but it's another story. Never pay more than msrp for any vehicle.
I got my '04 STi for $28,400 out the door w/ 300 miles on it.
Buy minimal used, buying a car new is the dumbest money move in all the world. No where else do you lose thousands of dollars within 5 seconds (when you drive it off the lot)
