Did everyone forget about the front mount?

Guys -
With all this talk about the benefits the STi has over the EVO, I thought I would remind everyone that one of the major benefits the EVO has over the STi is the front mount intercooler, including all of the hard piping/plumbing that is already ran. You gotta figure thats at least $2k right there as an aftermarket modification, if you include installation. Just my thoughts...

Subaru's top mound is unique man, besides, air has to travel a lot shorter distance to get from the intercooler to the turbo and the intake manifold with the Subaru set up. Now if you have a huge turbo that requires more air flow then the top mount intercooler can handle, then you should get a front mount. The STI's top mount intercooler is very efficient for the IHI it comes with.

It also has a nice hot flat four just below it. Look at any WRC car even the Subaru. The EVO intercooler package is pretty hard to beat. The many of the aftermarket ICs for the evo don't perform as well as the stock unit.

Good point. Perhaps that will help us out when making it to the 1/4 mile since we didn't get the six speed.

PS what does 4th gear in the US EVO 8 5 speed tranny top out at???

I don't think that 6 speed would make much of a difference for 1/4 mile times. The only nice thing about it would be a cruising gear for the highway and gearing setup to take advantage of a little more top speed, otherwise the current 5 speed is built well and proven.
Code:
   	US Evo JDM Evo 8
1st	2.928 2.909
2nd	1.950 1.944
3rd	1.407 1.434
4th	1.031 1.100
5th	0.720 0.868
6th 0.693
Final	4.529 4.583

An intercooler is like a radiator, but for air, not water/coolant. Rain can't get into an intercooler unless there is a big hole in it.

Its generally ok for rain to get into the enging compartment as long as its not buket sized amounts.

Does anyone have any info on the EVO FMIC?

Everytime I see a pic of it, all I can think about it the Star-Quest FMIC used in the 80s.

I'm just wondering if it is the exact same intercooler or not? Because, from the pics, it sure does look almost identical.

This may be a little off topic for this thread, but do we know what the 5-speed vs. 6-speed translates into as far as crusing rpm is concerned?
