Question Advice for buying a MR (with pics! -- beware 56K)

Greets, for the past month or so I've been looking to upgrade from my beloved Nissan Spec V. After test driving several cars, I had it narrowed down to an Evo 8, a STi and a G35 Coupe. At the moment there is a 2005 Silver Evo MR that tops my list, and I think I can get a good deal on it.

The dealer said it has been on the lot for about 3 months, and they would really like to sell it. I suspect it may have been there longer though. Even though he said only 2 or 3 other people have test drove it, it has 195 miles on it. Take a look at the attached pictures; the rotors and the header has a good bit of rust on them. I know this happens, but does it look severe??

Other than that, the outward appearance is great! They want $41,000 for it, but after five minutes of talking with the dealer he said he could work with me in the $35,000 range. And I suspect I could get it for less than that

So what do you guys think? Is it a good deal, and how low do you think I could get them? Any advice would be great! (sorry in advanced if the images don't show up)

*EDIT (pics fixed)*

If you can get it for that price - I'd say go for it.

Try to get even lower if it's been sitting on the lot for that long.

What have you got to lose - you're still covered by the original warranty.

I would even think twice about that purchase...

the rust on the rotors will come off after you hit the brakes one or two times. they rust up b/c they have been sitting for a while and its been raining, so don't worry about that.

41000 that is stupid, i woundn't pay that much maybe mid thirtys but try to see if you can talk him down some b/c the car has been driven 195 miles, which i know isn't that much but your not buying it with 5 or 10 miles on it you going to buy it with 195 ig difference. see if you can go lower and good luck man!

just to make sure do a autocheck on it. there is no telling why thats been sitting and why it has 195 miles. i work in the car industry and i have seen brand new car being sold that were not brand new cars. just a heads up.

195 is a lot for a new car. I don't think I've ever seen a new car with so many miles. I'll definatly get them to do a check on it before I buy, but like kapolani said, I'll still have the warrenty regardless. Thanks again for all the advice!

(PS - pictures re-fixed)

You got an "MR" for 31K out the door? And by "out the door" you mean inc. tax?

He is talking about an MR not a GSR or RS.

Don't worry about the rust, it is okay, you will change the header anyways later on down the road ( turbo kit, ect....)

tell them 200 over invoice tops... get the invoice from www.edmunds.com

(That means $34,204 plus taxes, reg, and fees)

To find out how long it's been stateside, look at the sticker on the drivers side doorwell. It should have a build date. Add two months for shipping and customs and you'll have a rough estimate for when it arrived at dealerships.

As other people say, don't worry about the rust spots on the breaks. That'll be gone after just a few stops. Same of the rust on the manifold -- everybody's looks like that.

Here are some things to look out for when buying a an evo with miles on it.

1) Has it followed break-in procedure? "Best break-in" aside", test drivers probably didn't treat the car the way you would treat it during the first couple hundred miles. This includes seeding the brakes and varying engine rpm.

2) Some people can't drive stick, but think they can. I've definitely seen people show up at dealerships wanting to try a sports car, then proceed to slip the clutchn like it's going out of style.

3) Although not very likely, I suppose dealer employees _could_ have taken some joy rides in the car.

In reality the car may be fine, but I would definitely drive that price much lower. As much as people like to claim the contrary, the car _does_ have a warranty. Just make sure that the wear items are in the new condition.
