Insurance rates...
Just wondering if anyone in here has gotten an insurance quote on the evolution. What type of coverage do you have? How's the car classified? Thanks. I'm calling my insurance guy tomorrow to find out if they have any info yet.

I spoke with some friends of mine that are insurance agents. They said that there is no classification for the EVO so they will use the OZ Rally as the main class. But, they add different items like "high performance" and different things like that, which add points to the rates... They gave me a quick qote of $1,100 a year for it.. We'll see.. But I am married, over 24, and nothing on my driving history, so good luck to anybody out there...
Can't quote a car if it isnt on the market.
Its going to be classified as a sub compact car like the WRX
so whatever the WRX's insurance rate is, expect it to be the same for a Evo.

Ok, talked to my insurance agent and got some rates. Now keep in mind here people, I have some of the best possible variables when it comes to insurance. I am over 25, I live in an ultra-low car theft county, have 10+ years of continous accident free coverage and have no speeding tickets on my record...
Quoted as per MSRP: $451.40 every 6 months.
Quoted as a 2003 WRX: $516.50 every 6 months.
So, there it is. She is going to email the underwriter with information I gave her about the car and see if anything would change. I'll hear back from her today or tomorrow.

To insure the Lancer Evolution and my current Saturn together: $1,100 every 6 months.
He said that as people file claims with this type of car, that rates will go up for everybody. The Evolution takes you out of the "preferred class" to be a discounted insured driver, so he told me to keep my Saturn.

Oh, and to give those an idea of what class the insurance for an EVO falls into:
It costs $40-$50 more than the EVO every 6 months to insure a 2003 Ford SVT Mustang Cobra (390HP / 390 Torque). Wow.
Oh, I test drove the Cobra after getting that quote. If you want a car with too much power, get the Cobra
I never floored it and I was scared!

state farm quoted me 15 dollars more than my talon...my talon is at about 68 bucks a month. So that is right on par with what fireball said. If I divided the wrx coverage by 67 it is about 15 dollars more a month than me right now. So I am assuming this is probably pretty close. My insurance guy always says that when I insure a car before it comes out...it my go up a bit or down a bit from the original quote after testing.
My vitals pretty much match Fireball's (10+ years driving experience, clean record, etc) and I've paid just under $500 6/months for my Talon since I bought it new. I'd suspect that the Evo will be in the same ballpark to insure.
If you don't have a clean record, driving experience, under 25, live in a high theft area, etc, I can see the rates being $1,000, $1,500, or more per 6/months. Some tips to keep your rates down regardless of your situation:
1) Make sure the agent knows about the airbags and engine immobilizer in order to get a discount (these can also be determine with the VIN). They should be good for 5-10% off your rates. The 'engine immobilizer" sounds like you yank the starter relay out
You may get a better discount if you add an aftermarket alarm.
2) If you can, put multiple cars on one policy. My insurer (Geico) gives me 20% off on the second car.
3) Take a defensive driving course. In NY, this is good for 3 years and gives me another 10% off. For 6 hours & $35, it's a steal.
4) Check your deductables. Going from a $250 to $500 or even $1000 can make a 10-20% difference.

There you have the Evo.

The Mustang Cobra is heavy at 3665 pounds, but with 390 HP and 390 TQ the power to weight ratio is vastly different between the Cobra and the Evo.
Cobra: Pounds/HP: 9.40 Pounds/TQ: 9.40
Evo: Pounds/HP: 12.04 Pounds/TQ: 11.95
(that's using 3263 pounds, 271 HP and 273 TQ for the Evo).
The Evo is a lot closer to a Mustang GT - 3241 pounds, 260 HP, 302 TQ)
(GT has better TQ/weight but we've got it beat in HP/weight).
The Cobra is an entirely different class of car... definately the best straight-line performance out of a stock car you can buy for the money...
(all that said, of course I'm buying the Evolution... just wanted to provide an accurate data point)..
FYI - with a chip, a bigger pulley and x-pipe they are getting 500WHP out of the new cobra.
Also - Just going to 4:10 gears and drag radials on a stock Cobra can allow it to run high 11's.
