Question Would you do this deal....??

Trade in your 2003 Evo with 17k miles dyno flash, exedy twin plate, upper ic and some other minor mods if you were getting $23,000 for trade and you could get a 2005 MR for $34,000? IDK what to do its a tough call.....this is based on a person who could afford payments comfortably as is now but would have to pay about $175 more a month making payment kind of tough but doable.....

I would say no, the MR is great and if I had no evo and were buying one now, I'd get an MR. But with my 03 all shined up and looking great with a quaife in the front and a custom dynoflash I see no reason to upgrade for what is ultimately a mild upgrade. With the Evo IX around the corner the MR is not worth 34K right now when you could wait a few months and get the IX for the same money. $175 more a month, sure, but in the end you're also paying tens of thousands extra if you plan on paying off the car. Pay off the car and then go all out knowing that you own the car for real instead of making another two years of payments. Just my opinion...

Try not to think so much in terms of monthly payment, because that's how they get you. If you actually thought about the money you put in your evo, which is around 12K + interest + mods which probably puts you around 15-16K in your car, and you get 5 back from the trade, it means you are set back 10K to get the MR. That's like 2 years of car payments and/or a set of coilovers, forged wheels, and serious power upgrades, plus the quaife which should close the majority of the handling gap right there.

same payoff here as well...contemplated selling her, but its a hard car to part with as this car makes me smile somehow everyday...I could take no less than 23K for mine stock either.

I had a much lower payoff...given about the same deal (25K for the trade and 36K on the MR...so just push a couple K around and you see the deal.) There were 2 or 3 reasons I decided to do it. One was, I hadn't gotten into many mods on my car yet (couple show/shine things...and an intake, even though I did have an exhaust install scheduled...I just put that on the MR.) Another reason was that my 03 had a couple issues that were never going to be resolved. I loved the car enough to not want out of an Evo, but to get out of the MR...well...it pushed me over the edge.
I agree to not think in terms of "payments", but we still do...and the dealers love that. My payments only went up like 20 bucks...so it wasn't a big deal in my monthly budget either. I also waited to see the IX specs, and wasn't overly impressed, so I figured I'd grab the MR while I could. At 175 bones more per month, I'd have walked away...but I agree, I was downto 2 years to pay off my 03, and I'm back to 4 years now at about the same payment. So I lost 2 years of being debt free (unless I pay it off early.)

In the situation of the original poster, I would pass. $175/month is a huge difference in terms of car payments. That's something like 2 civics!!! lol Just keep enjoying the one you have, since it's not TOO much different. Then when the X gets here, grab one of those. You will owe a lot less on your VIII, so the payment difference by then might not be too bad at all... Good luck either way!

keep your evo man

the MR carries the MR name, the blistens, the upgraded turbo components and lighter roof.
sure if you had to choose either one stock vs stock you would take the MR
but i would still take my 03
(i am not saying either car is 'better' 'worse')
