Question about stock exhaust
Quick question... did a little searching didnt find exactly what i was wondering though. I am very unfamiliar with the stock axle back. Could someone explain how people are opening it up? are they just poking around where the flange opens or how is that flapper thing removed? Someone mentioned rewelding.. Did they cut it open all the way? Also, I saw a diagram of the inside flow path of the stock axleback a little while ago.. Can't find it again. Can someone point me in the right direction?

You need to cut the entire top of the muffler out in a large rectangle from end to end. Next proceed to blast out the stupid spring loaded flapper and some other "stuff" in order get a nice straight path for the exhaust. The center tube is left in place and the outter tubes are removed. The center tube needs to be shortened a bit as well. You should leave the buttresses (sp)holding the center tube in place as well as the outter buttresses that used to hold the outter tubes in order to dampen vibration and support the case when you welded it back up. Then paint it with a flat black paint and it should look as good as new.

definitely understand where ur coming from with the just pay for it... but seing as i do have the curiosity to open the muffler up and with work on the car coming up getting to know how to weld would be good. could someone tell me what kind of a basic setup i could get? would it be under a grand?

i have a basic Mig welder i could sell you. I used it to weld a car chassis about a year ago. It's in great shape and makes perfect welds. Would be a great MIG to learn on. Compact too. If you're interested, send me a PM. I'll sell it for super cheap just to get it out of my appartment.
MIG is what most shops use cause they're cheap and easy as pie to use. TIG is pretty much the same thing, except it's not wire fed like MIG is and requires more skill. Costs more too. ARC is welding using a rod that welds once it makes contact with the surface. Easy to use, but IMO sucks *****. You need a good amount of space to use it since the rods are so dang long. You'd have trouble doing anything in tight places.
Edit: All of these you could use on exhaust. The MIG is going to be the most common and far far easier to use however.
