Question

Could be a leaking or blown head gasket - and one or more of your cylinders full of water. Remove all the plugs and see if the engine turns over then. If there is water in a cylinder it will spurt out.

You need to be careful not to bend a rod if this is the problem.

pop-starting = getting the car moving and "popping" the clutch to try to make the momentum of the car will turn the wheels to work the engine in reverse cycle....but once you engage the clutch...disengage it again quickly

I had a problem where it stalled, it was the fuseable link on the starter. removed the link and hard wired it. no problems. Any drivability issues? could you have locked up the Transfer case? could you have vibrations? need more info if you have it!

Hopefully Mitsu takes care of everything! BTW, my car acted similar when my old exhaust rubbed the o2 sensor wires on the bottom of the car and shorted it. I had to have it towed. Funny story from that: The tow truck driver told me "you oughtta buy a Ford, them things run forever!"

actually, this problem does sound like hydrolock to me. starter would click because it is not strong enough to compress water. car would lock all wheels no matter what gear it is in. could also be a timing belt prob too, but classic symptoms of hydrolock is more likely.

I get the whole water thing, BUT... He would have had to drive through a pond, or stick a garden hose in intake to get the amount of water needed to lock it up like that...

No, just a small leak in a Head Gasket into one cylinder would be quite sufficient to lock it up over night. If this is the case the water needs to be removed as soon as possible to avoid damage to the cylinder wall and piston rings.

Did you try using the other key that was provided to you at the point of sale?

Sometimes those transponder keys will give you that type of problem!

Thanks,

So with a small leaking head gasket as you stated, don't you think that he would have noticed other problems before total overnight lock up? If it is a small leak like you stated.....
