Odd quote from dealer...

They told me that a BOV will eventually bend the "fins" on my turbo.

Anyone want to shed light on this? I dont see how its possible.

This is how it's possible. When the diaphragm or metal parts in the BOV start detiorating and breaking down, the turbo will swallow the broken parts and enter the compressor housing, thereby causing damage to the "fin" of the turbo. Case closed.

If you have a VTA BOV, this is impossible as any "deteriorating parts" would be blown in to the engine bay and not into the turbo. If you have a closed-loop BOV, then it is no different than the stock piece, aside from not being a leaky plastic piece of crap.

You can actually do damage to the fins by not having a diverter valve or BOV at all. This is caused by the excessive perssure that would buildup between the closed throttle body and the compressor outlet of the turbo since it would still be spinning (and therefore still compressing air) during shifts.

WHOOOOOOOOAAA....dudes, what are you talking about. A bov, is not a wearable item. It will not wear out, nor will it ever cause damage to your turbo. A turbo car with out a BOV, will mess up your turbo, because it will shutter in between shifts.

oh, I'm sure those dealers know what they're talking about! especially when they start quoting stuff like, "You have aftermarket gauges and it's wrong cause the Evo only boosts 14psi" or "The heater core is reading high temps so it must be blowing heat" (try turning blower on and see if there's any heat!) yeah those guys are real smart

as for the original question it could happen if you've adjusted it so tight that the BOV is no longer opening. Then it'd be like there was no BOV at all.

To a point... an aftermaket piston type BOV will need maintenece from time to time to keep the piston moving freely within the cylinder, if not the piston could get stuck and not open and will cause compressor surge.

So make sure every few months to clean the dirt from it, and keep the piston lightly greased with a good quality lithium grease.

Now the question is, were you fortunate enough to only pay for the "non evo" price

My entire point is that when you all say "dealers" that is a general term. NOT all dealers are stupid. Would you be pissed if someone said that ALL evo owners are punks just because ONE of them is? Think before you speak.

There are good dealers and bad dealers but a statement like "don't listen to the dealers" puts all of us in the same box and we are all most definitely not the same. If you want to bash all dealers you had better have a good reason, from experience with every dealer, to bash them all. If you don't then you probably better be specific and I believe that there is another post for that.

Lots of people come here for advice based on experience. Advice based on experience is what people want. Advice based on heresay is useless. Everybody on EvoM has something good from experience to offer. I would wager that there is NOT ONE MEMBER that has been to every Mitsu dealer in the country. Don't make statements like you have.

Sorry, but the majority of salesmen at dealerships don't have a freakin clue. In every Mitsu dealership in my area, I've always known far more about the Evo than any of the salesmen. That is a shame. If I was a salesman at a dealership, I'd know every detail about every car in that lineup, especially the hottest one made (e.g. Evo). The things these people have said to me were downright embarrassing, and I made it a point to correct them on the spot so they don't continue saying that BS to potential buyers.

You are saying exactly what I was making a point about. From YOUR experience with dealers in YOUR area. You did not imply that ALL dealers were that way. There are good dealers and bad dealers. Not all are bad and not all are good.
