My Evo to STi Story (Long)

never had problems with my subies...had syncros replaced in my 02 with quite a few mods. the evo on the other hand id be reluctant to take it to a dealership for any service work if i modded it.
if subaru would bring the spec c to our shores id get rid of my evo for another sti.
Sorry to hear what happened. STi are good cars, "torquey" at low RPMs and sound mean with an exhaust. I'm also sure they offer a LOT better warrenty.
Service sucks around here. I took my VR-4 in one time to the local Mitsu dealer near me (NJ), and they refused to replace my clutch because it was "heavily modified". So i took my VR-4 to another Mitsu dealer, they changed my clutch... and flywheel (i had a stage 3 - 6 puck clutch with aluminum flywheel) and charged me $2100 with labor and to replace the seals.
Along with the repair, i also think they did a little secret swap (atleast i believe so after i got my car back and looked around)....

To my credit I was using the most expensive FRAM filter, I've always been a little weary of the quality of several products at Wal-Mart, not just the FRAM filters... It's just that Wal-Mart has never really screamed "quality" to me, but hell, we're all guilty of shopping there... Live and learn, 'eh?

And then you go on the typical EvoM rant about how all dealers are rip offs. All this, all that, 100%, blah blah, whatever... Save it.That's not the point. He got jacked around because they didn't want to have to eat his bill if warranty didn't cover it. It's not the same as just someone walking in off the street with an old car neeing engine work. They could try to "rip him off" as you say, but he could always go get another quote from another dealer, a grage or tuner shop to compare prices.

I have to disagree. The dealer should have admitted as soon as they discovered it was crankwalk that it was their issue and covered it, no questions asked...ESPECIALLY considering there were absolutly no modifications on the vehicle that would have caused the issue, but they didn't. That's bottom line. This is why Magnuson Moss exists. To protect consumers against companies who don't warranty their product against manufacturer defects.
If any of the modifications I'd done to my vehicle could have caused crankwalk (example: 3000lb ceramic disc clutch) then I would have eaten the repair cost. As someone said earlier, sometimes you pay to play.
Here's a little about me. I broke a shift-rail in my 98 GSX tranny by shifting too hard. Instead of trying to get it covered by warranty or pointing fingers elsewhere I rebuilt my tranny with tougher components so it could hold up and I changed my shifting habits. I have also blown a turbo because I had it boosting too hard. (19 PSI on a T-25) Again, I replaced the turbo and learned my lesson. This was all part of my growing pains, pains we all experience when coming of age with performance cars. I paid for these repairs because I hate people who blow their **** up and blame everyone else except the person responsible, themselves...but crankwalk on a car with intake, exhaust, and a turbo timer. I have learned enough to know that parts like those don't cause crankwalk, and I'm pretty sure my local dealer has too.
If you read the story, it tells you I paid $200, their cost on lifters. I did this because I believed it was right. If I was the cause of the problem by using FRAM filters instead of Mobil1 or OEM, then that was my bad and I felt obligated to own up to it. I had already researched the cost for new lifters ($155 from slowboy racing) and was prepared to install them. I figured $155 for the lifters, $20 for shipping, and 4 hours of labor in my garage was what I was willing to pay for my mistake. When the dealer proposed I pay them $200 ($188.90 to be exact) I figured it was a fair price. If the story had ended there, I don't think this post would exist.

You know that, I know that, but they didin't. All they know is they have a modded Evo that has a serioous problem after only a few thousand miles. That sends up red flags which automatically puts them on edge. I'm not saying its right, or its wrong - it just is. They tried to blame the oil just in case they could find a way to blame you so they wouldn't have to pay up. You can claim Magnuson-Moss all you want, but the bottom line in the world world is some dealers will become very leery of any car that is modded because they are scared of having to eat a high repair bill. They eventually fixed it, but they did on their time - which is par for the course when they are trying to assign blame. Especially since they have no clue as to what mods you might have removed before you brought it in - it isn't like that hasn't been tried before.
All I am really trying to say is expect trouble when you bring in a modded car for warranty work. Expect to be given the run around, having to wait. Just like some of you guys say all dealers will try to rip you off, they probably say all customers will try to lie to you about how they've treated their car, whether it has been raced or abused or not, or if the there has been certain modifications done or undone to it. It is just all part of the experience no matter what vehicle it is.

LMAO @ them telling you only Iridium plugs will work in the Evo. Apparently they've never taken an ounce of chemistry, and whoever said that should be choke-slammed for being stupid.
Also, this is why my Evo is bone stock... This way I don't have to listen to the extra excuses from Mitsubishi if the car has a problem.
I also don't think moving to Subaru is going to solve much for you if you start modding once again. My friend Craig has an STi that was turned down a few weeks ago for warranty work because of a few "simple" mods.
Business is business... These days any car maker is gonna try to get out of paying for warranty work any way they can. Looking for a mod is a damn good place to start. Don't give them that reason if you value your warranty.
Enjoy your STi. They're obviously great cars.
