I'm looking to put a set of harnesses and I don't want to use the back seat belts. My car has a custom cage in it(put in by previous owner) and I want to use the bar that is right behind the seat. My concern is that it is too close to the seats. How much room do you need between the seats and the bar? Any opinions?? yeah i dont see why not....my sparco bar is about in the same place....but that cage is probably more sturdy than some bolt in bar....i wouldnt hesitate if i were you

 

I don't really have concern about the strength of the bar, I know it will hold up as the hole cage is welded in. I'm just concerned about the buckle that needs to go between the seat and the bar. I want a 3" harness and I can see they bunch a little bit in the holes of the seat. I'm just worried there won't be enough room for the buckle

 

scoot the seat closer?

have you checked your proper seat location? ( upright as possible, slight hint of recline, arms over the steering wheel, with wrists braking on the top of the wheel. )

it doesn't look that far forward, maybe it's just the picture.

I'd be more concerned with that roll bar, and lack of a solid corner to upright brace. nothings keeping the top from coming down in a roll-over.

 

The seat is somewhere in the middle, any closer and my knees are hitting the dash. I don't recline my seat very far and my wrist do sit on top of the wheel when I's sitting back.

I don't think I understand your conern about the bar. To be honest I don't know crap about proper roll bar/cage building. There is a bar on each side that you can't see in the picture that goes past the front seats and is welded to the floor about even to where the dash starts. You can see a little bit of it in the bottom left corner of the picture.

 

i gotcha on the seat moving, i just walked out to see and mines right over the door locks, so it's a little farther back.

More pics of the setup would be nice, just to see what they did.

Whereas yours looks definatly stronger for a side impact (bar being reinforced towards the center)


edit: just saw the rest of the pics in the first post. The guy that owned the car must have been seriously short. That bar should be a whole lot tighter to the roof, etc.

Do you have any plans to swap seats? If so, that'd be an option, or go with lower rails (if you're a tall guy, i'm 6'3 and welcomed the drop with my new seats).

Otherwise, i'd be a little leary, you don't wanna pull yourself down too much, and looks like you'd be doin that. i'd rate it "borderline"/ pain in the *** to run the harnesses . The close up of the bar makes it not look bad at all though, i honestly can't tell man, sorry. From that shot, it doesn't look bad at all.

 

Is there a better angle I could take a picture from for you? I would say I'm average 5'11" so the bar is above my head still. The picture you attached is a full cagew correct? Where as what I have would be concidered a rollbar. At least that what it seems from the information I gathered. I can take as many pictures as you want, just let me know what you want to see. Again, you should be ok with that angle, as I'm just a little over my strap holes when i'm in mine, and that kinda has the same effect. Not good, but better than a stock 3 pt by far.

also, unless you're using something like the schroth's that have ASM (anti-submarining), a 4 pt is slightly risky. Nothing keeps you from sliding down under the lap belt. Thats what i moved up to a 5 pt, and in turn, swapped seats.
