6 speed tranny "fragile" in Evo IX???

I did a search on this and did not get much. So I must ask...
Is it true that the 6 speed tranny is "Fragile"? Is the 5 speed stronger than the 6? Should this be a concern when considering purchase of a new Evo IX and yes mods will be in the future( probably far off ) of the car?

5 speed might be better geared vs 6 speed.

The third gears is not as big as the 5 speed tranny third gear but to say as the six speed is fragile. The answer is no.

Is the 6 speed tranny really much bigger than the 5? I've heard some people mention they think that the 6 is weaker because its the same size but the gears have to be smaller. I've never been able to really study the 2 next to each other. Someone must have some hard info on this matter? Some pictures of the gearsets would be a great way to settle this 6 vs. 5 speed dispute once and for all.

i was told by a buddy of mine that works at mitsu and knows enough people to verify this that there are little issues with the 6 speed transmissions over the 5 speeds. so im assuming the 6 speed has more of an advantage in its life span.

i know i havent heard of a MRs going to the shop for a tranny problems. If anyone has please inform us cus i would like to know.

see that just silly, think about how many regular 5 speed are out compared to the 6 speeds. Its normal to see more 5 speeds down just because there is a greater number of them...

My buddy just got out of the shop with an EVO IX GSR......one of his synchros was toasted (maybe 3rd?), and he had to get it replaced.

On the other hand, Scott from TTP just destroyed up his 6 speed EVO VIII MR and went to a 5 speed GSR tranny.

I guess its all in how you use it/take care of it. My friend beats the hell out of his tranny (no lift shifts) and Scott cranks out 11.28s with the stock turbo.

My 2cents

All these tranny pros crawling out of the woodwork have likely never seen the inside of a transmission.

It is 4th-5th-6th that are a bit small on the 6sp.

Scott, you put a 5 speed in your car now? So I assume you are now able to go thur the traps in 4th.

I like the broken gears. Just means your tryin hard.

Yes and sort of...

Lemme just say Friday I bounced off the 8000rpm limiter a few times in 4th gear of the 5speed while crossing the traps. You do the math. The ACT gave up both passes attempted. On the 2nd pass I let off in 1st and got back on it.

No, my signature is not up to date.

Ok, what does that tell us regarding the "fragility"? (it's only one tranny) Smaller 4-6 gears could lead someone to believe it could be weak, but weak for what? (500lb/ft and no lift shifting?)

People also destroyed the 5sp trannys, as well as the TC, the clutch, etc.

I'm on this board several times a day....I don't see many peeps complain about breaking them. Not yet anyways.

We do see that for drag racing the 6spd is not your #1 choice (gear spacing), especially at altitude. For road racing it works beautifully (IMO). It does take some practice going from a 5sp to 6sp as far as "hunting" for gears and getting your hand motions down.

Perhaps a better question is - What is the power limit of the 6sp before you start breaking things? Ham fisted, speed shifting monkeys aside

Honestly I think something went wrong that would have been covered under warranty. I found a retaining pin loose inside the case. Going to send it out for inspection.

It's my understanding that they're both pretty stout trannys. Not unbreakable by any means, but if you take care of them, you should be fine with either.
