I commute from Diamond bar to LA about 65 mile round trip every day, and I see ALOT more evos than STI.

Really?

All that shows is more Evo owners are willing to drag race than STi owners. You have me and a handful of other so cal people here who are seeing more STi's than Evo's. We are not lying, we are reporting what we see. Keep a close eye on the OC area, you will be amazed how many STi's are there compare to Evo's.

So far the trend seems like the east coast has way more sti's than evo's and the west coast has more Evo's than Sti's...strange! I live in the Baltimore/DC area and I have to say there are 8 times as many STI's rolling around than Evo's...

Really think again, because I'm seeing more people in this thread say EVOs than STI/STis (in So Cal) and believe me I do pay attention, to the three EVOs on my block, and the five at my job, and the countless numbers of other EVO owners I see day to day. Today for instance have already seen 4 EVOs, and not a single STi/STI. Maybe you should pay a little better attention bro.

I hardly ever see STi's here in Columbus, seems like I see more EVo's. The dealership across the street from mine sells subie's and they most have sold ALOT of STi's with in the week. I remember seeing 4 there when driving to work on monday and today when I was driving home they were gone.
But the Mitsu dealers never have any EVo's in stock....... go figure.

I don't normally engage in illegal activities on the streets but if I see an STi/STI and the conditions are good, then it's ON! So far it's only been ON one time. In the mean time everyday I'm giving a fellow EVO owner the wave. And I'm all over So Cal, this weekend I'll be in the OC saturday morning, Hollywood at night, and Ontario sunday morning, and City of Industry sunday night.
I don't think track appearances should have any indication of how popular the STi/Evo is here in so cal.

Like everyone says here, nobody has any real numbers so in effect this question still has not been answered except with by observations and speculation.

FINALLY FOUND AN ANSWER!

After searching financial papers for both companies, I realized that this was a difficult answer to determine. I decided to approach this answer through a different method. My method consists of researching data in the used car market. I decided to do a test with a well known used car market that would randomly sample the whole population. That site is autotrader.com. I did several tests which proved rather difficult because it was hard for autotrader's search to dissimulate between the standard wrx and the sti. Therefore, I conducted to tests to sample. The first being between the whole Lancer family and the whole Impreza family and the second being the Evos and the WRXs that cost more than $20,000 The lancer model years searched were between 2003 and 2006 and the imprezas were between 2004 and 2006 as to weed out the wrxs. The results are as follows:

'03 to '06 Lancers: 636 units
'04 to '06 Imprezas: 771 units
'03 to '06 Evos: 364 units
'04 to '06 Imprezas (>$20k): 521 units

All cars selected also included manual transmission.

Feel free to enter your zip code and select a radius to determine your true locality.

I knew for a fact that there were more STIs than all 3 variations of Evolution produced for MY2005 and MY2006 as mitsubishi is currently restructuring there company and producing less cars than the previous 2 years, while subaru has increased production to saturate the current US market.

I don't see how that can prove much, other then the total number of used cars on the market. I can tell you that in calendar year '03 and '04 (I don't have '05 numbers) Mitsubishi sold more Lancers then Subaru sold Imprezas, but that still doesn't help us. The hard part is that Subaru might consider the STi to be a trim level of the WRX, like the MR is to the Evo - rather then a whole seperate car and may not release those figures. But FWIW, thatnks for the info.

Well the only evo's I see is some lady driving one every morning when I get off from work. I see her getting her cup of coffee from the near by pizza place or stopping at the stop light. But other than that I see too many STi around and they are all the same color=blue. Infact there's an old fart at my work drive around a black one. It's pretty cool at where I work. There's an EVOLUTION, STi, SRT-4, Corvetts, Camaros, Charger and some other cars. By far mine is the best one out of them all

Mirroring what a lot of people have said, I typically see more STis than Evos. I live in Newport Beach and work at the Irvine Spectrum from Monday-Friday, and it's very common for me to see a different STi everyday on the freeway or something, whereas I'll probably see another Evo once every two or three days.

As far as the numbers go, I remember reading that in the calendar year 2003 (not model year), Mitsubishi had plans to import about 6500 Evos to the U.S. while Subaru had plans to import about 3500 STis. I don't know how accurate the numbers ended up being at the end of the year, but keep in mind the Evos launched in March 2003 and the STis launched in June 2003, if I remember correctly, so that might've been one of the reasons for the difference in numbers for that year. I'd assume that in the following years, the numbers grew a lot closer to each other.
