If your planning to race, go with the evo. Cheaper to run and much lighter. But for everyday non track use the S4 is much nicer. Personally i'm very performance biased so i sold my M3 for the evo and I still feel i made the right choice.

Try the S4 transmission and you will want out of the S4 deal. It's nothing compared to the Evo's transmission. The pre-2002 Audi manual tranny is one of the industry's worst (probably 1 notch above Mercedes manual).

But really, your decision should depend on what you're looking for. Evo is a pure performer, while S4 has luxury elements (status symbol). Different people have different objectives, it's really hard for us to give you advise without knowing what your objectives are.

It was a 3.2L E36. The E46 was to my liking until I found out the handling is worst with much more weight I wanted another M3 but BMW messed it up and became more toward luxuary than sport.

I have the E36 M3 right now. I'm trying to keep it and buy an EVO but it's looking grim. I might have to sell the M when I buy the EVO cause I need to buy an SUV for the wifey.

I don't drive an S4, but I have an Audi. Very nice overall, solid built quality. One of the first thing to upgrade if you're going w/ the stage 2 is the brake due to its weight. The S4 is more stable during high-speed/top end.

The EVO is more "pure" and more agile in low-speed corners and twisties. Performance-wise, they're very different cars to compare.

At the end of the day, it really comes down to your own needs/preferences. Is it going to be you daily driver for a daily 2-hr commute? If so, the EVO will prob give you a painful butt
